3. Well, I may as well add my two cents on the subject of the death indexes. You have to be very creative when using that index. I've found the best way to find someone --if you don't find their name as you think it should be --is to just search by the last name. I know it can be a horrendous search if you have a common name, but I've found that some times women are not listed with just their first name i.e. Elizabeth Johnson, but might be found as Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson. That index is going to look for the first letter. This has happened to me so many times. Same problem with men. Sometimes they're listed with just their initials. Then of course you have to use every spelling variation you can think of because of misspells, or because the transcriber read it wrong. Using the soundex helps in that case. They are online beginning in 1997 I believe. For whatever reason I am having trouble accessing it myself tonight so I can't give you the exact detail. Go to www.startribune.com On the left side scroll down to find obituaries - you may have to first go to the metro section - I am not 100% certain. But it is on the website and really easy to use. Jo

2. Re MN death certificates. Simply go to the MHS Death certificate index. Put the name in and click okay. If the person died in Minnesota the name will come up. For a shorter search put in the death date or other requestion information. I have found the mothers maiden name, county of birth and birth dates. The information is there only if it was given by someone. Print it out. If you don't see on the web site, you won't see it on the official death certifcate, and it won't cost you anything. 2. Branching Out
3. Hi Bev, Your statements are only partially correct. When the health department started entering information, they did not complete the field "mother's maiden name". Later, after MANY death certs had already become part of the database, the field was filled in. This means many death certs WILL have that information, despite the index showing they don't. Unfortunately, NOT all the people who died in Minnesota appear on the index. And those that do may contain errors, either on the original document or in the transcription process. Some death certificates were simply missed. Some have such terrible penmanship, the transcriber couldn't begin to guess the correct spelling of the decedent's name. But more importantly, the index tells only part of the story. If you want to climb your family tree, you'll want to step on complete branches. (My web site details the information that may be found on a death certificate.) If saving money is an issue, I'd get certificates for my direct line and obits for the direct and collateral lines. However, it's been my experience that there are often wonderful surprises waiting to be discovered on the most unlikely death certificates. 3. I would try St. Anthony's Cemetery, Minneapolis - if she was living in Minneapolis when she became a widow, that's where her husband would be most likely buried. Their records are kept at the office St. Mary's Cemetery, 4403 Chicago Avenue Minneapolis, MN 55427 612-822-0907. You should ask about both locations. ----- Original Message ----- From: "JOANNE MACK" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, June 13, 2003 5:18 PM Subject: [MNHENNEP] Lamb, John & Rosanna- Minneapolis > This is my first posting to the list. > I have found my GG-grandmother Rosanna LAMB on the 1880 Minneapolis, census. age 51, Widow ( of John) She was keeping house for my then unmarried G-grandmother & G-uncle. > I'm looking for a death & burial record for her. Jan The newspaper of the time would have been the Minneapolis Tribune and/or the Minneapolis Star, I believe. The Trib was traditionally the morning paper (and the Sunday paper) and the Star was evening. Eventually they combined and are now the Star Tribune. BUT... the newspaper office does not maintain an archive of newspapers, they are all kept at the Minnesota History Center. they have all news papers published in Minnesota, most from the very first publication, on microfilm. You should be able to contact them and ask them to make a copy of the obituary for a small fee. Jo Hogle

3. Hi Joanne, I didn't see any good possibilities on the death index for Rosanna. Have you found obituaries for the people with whom she was living? She might be mentioned as either predeceasing or surviving them. Either way it would narrow your search. It's possible she died before 1908 when death certificates were the "norm". Have you checked into the death register for 1899 or the death cards from 1900 to 1907? There is information about both on my web site (address below). Let me know if I can be of help. I have waited as long as 8 months from several historical societies across the US for information. Few are this long- but I have learned I have to be patient and I will get it eventually. I am just grateful when a volunteer will help me out for a minimum of the cost and Sandy also will look up obituaries and the Historical Society doesn't offer that. Some of those obituaries are quite informative and give information I can't get anywhere else.
