Susan, That is the practice if requesting by mail or fax. I had to have my birth record application notarized when I mailed my request in. I'm out of state. It should have said something on the bottom of the form when you requested the certificate. Dan
Just got my letter back from Hennepin County. I had requested my mother's birth certificate. They returned my check and wrote on the letter I had to have it notarized to get the certificate. Is this a new practice? My mother was born in 1910 and died in 1983. Susanne

That would give you names of parents, children, spouses, and siblings. It would also tell you where they resided. And then using that information you can work backward in census records to determine the next generations. Or you could request copies of death certificates from the Minesota History Center, at a cost per certificate. There are people willing to do that for a fee which is less than the MHC charges, but you need to contact them personally - you can find that information on the Minnesota GenWeb page. Jo Hogle

I DID give help and explained what she could find on her birth certificate and who to contact to get it. If you have been part of this list for any period of time you know that I offer help and advice willingly and often and have done so for many years. I am the listowner of 29 rootsweb mailing lists and we get questions from people that are not doing genealogy research but find our names with search engines for surnames and areas (such as Hennepin County) so I made the comment in passing to Claudia. It was just a joking comment to a listowner and friend, as I wondered how she had found Claudia as she was wanting her birth certificate for a passport and is not a genealogist or member of the list. But I DID answer the question. Did any of you who have jumped down my throat, on the list or privately, answer her question? I seem to be the ONLY person that DID answer the woman's request for information, and yet I am criticized for a comment made in passing before giving the information she needed. Please don't accuse me of turning a deaf ear or being petty when I was at least willing to answer her question. I didn't see a response from anyone else, including all of you who are so ready to criticize me. My intent was not to offend and I apologize to anyone who took my comment out of context. Jo

I think we have answered a lot of other questions that were a lot further off our path than trying to help someone with a question about a birth certificate. We listen to petty arguments that used to go on for some time until Claudia took over. Claudia Not sure why she is contacting you as this is not a genealogy issue, it is her own birth certificate that she wants. But aren't you supposed to know everything? LOLOL She should contact the Minnesota Vital Records office, just as anyone else would who needs a copy of their birth certificate. She has to pay the same costs and she will get a copy that is valid for all purposes, with her adoptive parents names listed as her parents. Basically it is exactly like any other certificate, it does not indicate in any way that there was an adoption. Jo

You may want to send your request to those county mailing lists. HOWEVER... that said, there were few, if any, records for births, baptisms and marriages kept in Minnesota in the 1840's. We did not gain statehood until 1858 after the 1857 territorial census indicated there were enough people to qualify for statehood (but we now know that a large number of those folks were fabricated) You may have to research Father Ravoux to find out where he resided and the community he served. I am assuming he was probably a missionary in the St Peter area working with the native population. The historical society in St Peter might have some information on the early settlement there.
