Just a couple of questions for y'all and an observation: I did a FB search and found the folllowing MN FB groups: Minnesota Genealogy (closed group) Minnesota Norwegians (closed group) Minnesota genealogy network (closed )group) Stearns County Genealogy Minnesota Genealogica lSociety DNA Interest (closed group) Benton County Genealogy Swift County Genealogy Do y'all think A Nicollet County group would be a good idea? A MNGenweb Group? I can only judge how a FB group enhances a Genweb site based on my experiences with such in FLGenWeb and I have to say that the experiment thus far has been positive as far as getting new material for FLGW sites. The Pioneering Families of Florida Document transcription Challenge netted 63 wwills 1 will book index and several Letters of admin being transcribed and place on FLGW sites, the prize a 10.00 walmart gift card, and several members have stepped up and donated 15.00 gift cards to the restaurant of winner's choice for march and april and Southern Gourmet Spice Company has donated a 24 oz bottle of their Kenny Bears Old Florida BBQ Rub, and a member of the group donated a 50.00 Amazon.com gift card as well, keeping the Challenge going until August of this year. I was thinking maybe a Pioneer Families of MN group could work too. We have 3 questions that each person must answer before being admitted to the group: Who was your Florida Pioneer? When and where did they settle in Florida? (pioneer must have been in Florida prior to Feb 25, 1845 or in an area before the county was formed) Are you actively researching your Florida Roots? Each person who asks to join is sent by FB Private message those question and given a week to respond before they are allowed in the group. The sheer amount of information that is being exchanged daily is awesome. In less than a year we have 950 members actively trying to research their Florida Ancestors. The thing is, i don't know enough about MN to start such a group BUT would be happy to help with it...... laverne
I think it is all well and good for those who have the time to do such. I have enough plates spinning as it is. Some will go away in the next month or so but new plates will likely replace them. Best wishes to those who do. Tim On Sun, Mar 8, 2015 at 8:18 AM, Laverne H. The TXGenWeb has a FB page and while it gets lots of "likes" and an occasional post asking for information on ancestors, it does not produce much information that can be transferred to the county websites. A county FB page may work better for that and is certainly worth a try. The exposure of state and county genealogy websites on FB is a good way to introduce younger people to genealogy and the USGenWeb in particular Shirley On Sun, Mar 8, 2015 at 7:18 AM, Laverne H. Norman County also has a Norman Genealogy Facebook page. It is run by one of our members. The link is on our page and our link is on the FB page. The site does get traffic and provides a place for people to seek help and to share information. In this day and age I think it is one of the ways to attract younger seekers. The FB page hasn’t generated much in the way of new information for the web site but does provide a method for look up and people seeking information on family. I've considered creating a Facebook page for Jackson CO MN. There is a fairly large interest in Jackson Co history based upon the existing facebook pages related to that geographical area. St. Peter (Nicollet Co) often discusses historical items on their "hometown" page. Dave McGuire often posts genealogy-related posts on the St. Peter hometown facebook page. I think it is certainly worth considering doing. Randy Wendel Jackson Co CC On Sun, Mar 8, 2015 at 7:18 AM, Laverne H.
