    3. Tim, SEO Search engine optimization A good explanation here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine_optimization Metadata http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metadata When metadata is buried in an image. The search engine can add it to there hit list. Kinda like having keywords in a webpage. eventually once the web spiders crawl our pages it will pick up the info and add it to the search data. I can send the info I buried in the image. If you do a search for me... Keith Gulsvig and look at the images you can see stuff I did. I'm the only Keith Gulsvig in the US. Becky Gulsvig (no relation other than here family and my family came from the same area of Norway) will come up too. 1. Re: [MNGEN] SC Question
    2. Timothy Stowell via
    3. Karen and all, In 1998 or thereabouts the SC of Georgia went off to France and mostly disappeared. The ASC at the time was in over his head. At least he tried. Too many years ago to remember but at some point he asked me to become ASC of the state, while he took over as acting SC. At some point after that we had a election of two candidates, when I became SC. I decided to appoint regional coordinators to assist in running the project. With 161 counties (159 current and 2 defunct) it was too much for just the previous two persons to manage. I used a map I found that the State tourism department had put together that divided the state into regions. Not all regions were the same size but they roughly have 20 counties or so per region. The RCs were to assist CCs in their region. Some took on state wide special projects. The state page was redesigned at least twice during my tenure. Of course what one person sees as a logical display of a home page and what another one sees is quite different - yet I tried to make such user friendly so that items were grouped together of like kind - so that visitors could go to the area of interest and use the main page only as a table of contents of the site. It's one thing to start from scratch, another to makeover what someone else has created. Around 2000-2001, a committee was formed after the national Bylaws were in place to create a set for Georgia. Having been present at the time the USGenWeb Bylaws were created, the experience in Georgia was nearly identical. I've experienced something similar in Tennessee, but different and much less acrimonious. Thus I would approach such in MNGenWeb carefully. I would be curious how MTGenWeb enhanced the USGenWeb bylaws? Yes, LIFE definitely is a juggling act....and some of us are better at it than others......you seem to have the right attitude and the process works for you. 3. I would like to weigh in here, too, regarding the question/s that Karen has proposed. It can happen....does happen and it is unfortunate when it does. My position should it happen on my watch, would be to roll up my sleeves and get to work, with the help of any ASCs that are in place. I would certainly encourage and recruit all the CCs to get involved with the reconstruction, also. There is always something that someone can do if they are willing. Most certainly there would be RECOVERY of pages necessary, and/or REBUILDING of those pages that are retrievable, TRANSCRIBING (typing) done by those who are able.....and the list goes on. If there are no bylaws & procedures in place when such a thing happens, then that certainly would generate and should generate discussion by the SC with the CCs & the organization process to get the ball rolling to formulate bylaws, etc. Importantly the reconstruction takes time.....it must be understood that it won't happen overnight. But with caring people behind the project to rebuild IT CAN and WILL TAKE PLACE. Thanks for asking, Karen. 3. Greetings everyone, Just got off the phone with Marc Pennau and he will be emailing me permissions that the logo he designed for the MNGenWeb project in 2004 is theirs to do whatever they wish with and he does not claim copyright as it was a gift to the project. Very nice young man who apparently was just messing around with graphics software one day and made it. His mother who has passed away was the genealogist involved and it was submitted by her on his behalf. I am very happy that lovely logo can be made compliant and used with permission. 3. Thank you Martha. How did you recruit these new CCs and did the state adopt any rules or bylaws that would hopefully prevent a re-occurrence of this situation? I ask because part of the recovery of MTGenWeb was the adoption of basic rules that greatly enhanced the USGenWeb bylaws. 3. Greetings Candidates, As a previous SC of a state that had to be rebuilt after nearly dying, I was curious if any of our candidates had a similar history that they could draw upon as MNGenWeb climbs the stairs of success? I know Shirley does have some of that experience as we rebuilt MTGenWeb but I wanted to hear from everyone in this matter. Thank you, Karen Becker, Todd and Stearns

    1. [MNGEN] SC Question for Shirley & Martha

    3. Good afternoon ladies, I'd like to know how you, Shirley, plan to SC MNGenWeb when you are SC for two other states - one with 254(?) counties, plus your own counties, your mailing lists, and your in-home life. How will you balance your time between all that? Martha, I have basically the same question. How do you plan to SC MNGenWeb when your are SC for California? How will you balance your attention between the two in addition to your counties, mailing lists, and in-life? Colleen

    3. Colleen & List Thank you for the question. Balancing the duties of SC, CC and life in general takes practice and a sense of humor. Here in CA, I have 3 great ASC's to help if things go awry. But as mentioned in my other note, we are a laid-back group and mature enough to deal with the ebb and flow of life on and off line. One of my mantra's is: Health and Family First. So if there are issues, and folks want to mention it to me, then I am available to listen. As a CC for many Counties, I deliberately make time to work on them. This is what I signed up to do and any time I think I can't do the job, I will step down. It is a matter of being honest with myself. If I 'over commit', I am the first one to say 'whoa'. If elected to SC of MN, the first thing I would do is get at least 3 ASC's in place and divvy up the Counties between the 4 of us. It is an exercise in frustration to think that any one person can handle almost 90 Counties and do a decent job. My personal life is one of organized decisions. I do what I can as a Volunteer and as a parent of three 'card carrying adults'. My Grandchildren [5] are all grown, I do not have to babysit, nor do I have Gr Grandchildren to play with. I have no pets, but do plant veggies in the spring. Martha
