    3. OK thank you. Now I understand. The USGenWeb Banner is still on my North Dakota counties without the search box. I don’t have any special code that I put in. It’s all placed in there by the rootsweb people just like the current banner for Minnesota with the search box. Their is a special tag you have to put on your page for the USGW Banner to appear, unfortunately I do not know what that code is, as at the time it was done, I had no sites on RW. 2. Mike Peterson via (Dino)
    3. forwarded for information – saw this on a national board. Mike ================ I have been working with UTGenWeb. The SC resigned a few months ago, and the ASC has recently resigned. We have a new redesigned state page and have numerous counties available for adoption. I would love to have new CCs adopt our counties there. If you are willing to make a commitment to one of these counties, it would make a huge difference to the state. Presently the following are available for adoption: Box Elder - totally off line for quite some time Daggett Davis Grand Iron Juab Kane Millard Piute Tooele There may be another one or two but not fully decided yet. I have learned that numerous of the prior CCs resigned some time ago; however, the counties were not marked adoptable. If you are interested in one of these counties, please contact me and place the county name in the subject line. Send your email to me at: [email protected] My request is that if you adopt a county, please do not turn it into a blog or a word press site. Thanks for your consideration. All of my Louisiana GenWeb sites are on theusgenweb.org and if I had to leave as CC, any person approved by the State Coordinator and replacing me will be provided access to the site for updating, etc. I have never had any problems with the host or managing the web sites. 3. Thanks Martha but I did all that earlier in both of my browsers. Makes no difference. I started to look at the source code they use to install the banner and compare what sites have the search box and what don’t. After several minutes I said the heck with it. Why spend my time on something like this when I have so much other stuff that’s productive and also in the middle of it I was very seriously thinking about changing servers. That’s not the most fun but in long run it would be better. Heard back from Joy and Bryant’s note has convinced me to go with theusgenweb.org server. Some time ago, somebody told me that rootsweb uses more than one server and that not all counties are on the same one, so maybe that’s why. Puzzling. When I first started the Minnesota county, there was no banner as I recall. I even went into wayback to check and sure enough it wasn’t there so I guess this is all recent for Minnesota sites. Mike, On the Discuss list I found that back in October, 2014 you were talking about the banners then - when they said USGenWeb Project on the left - in fact banners I saw on 4/1, and other sites with no banners. Is the big hooha now that they have included a search engine on the banner? I wonder if one couldn't put a blurb right beneath that saying this does not search this site? See this with a link to your own site's search engine? 3. Mike, that is weird. I just checked again. And the ND county sites that I checked just now (those that are on RW) do have the new RW/Ancestry banner with the SEARCH box to the far right. 3. I noticed it this morning and I will be moving my site as soon as possible. It is the same nickel and dime effort to generate more revenue that they used when ancestry took over Rootsweb the first time. Rootsweb is a good organization, but they do belong to ancestry and will do what they are told to do. Bryant -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Mike (Dino) Peterson via Sent: Thursday, April 2, 2015 8:55 AM To: [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: [MNGEN] Rootsweb Heading Have you noticed the new Rootsweb heading that ancestry.com is putting on top of our pages? It now contains a search box for ancestry. Personally I think this will hurt as there are many people who don’t like ancestry.com, they charge too much, etc. It was one thing we acknowledge they give us free hosting, it’s another where we now are a portal for their site. This search box heading is not on my other rootsweb sites (yet), just Minnesota. At this time a disclaimer on outside links on our websites is a recommendation, maybe with this blatant search box that should change. 3. The way to preserve your site if you are no longer able to take care of it for some reason is to "will" the site to the MNGenWeb project and provide login and PW for future access. I know Shirley has a file for such things and should be a requirement of the SC or SCs to maintain the confidentiality and integrity of the information they care for going forward. At the IAGenWeb we have administrative files that require a PW to get in to in order to safeguard this type of information. The fear I have of moving over to my other sites/servers is what will happen to the MNGenWeb site if I involuntarily cannot do it anymore. Anyone have any thoughts on that? Although it would be nice to have the whole state on one server, we really don’t have to do that. > Mike > Clay Co > > From: Genealogy via > Sent: Thursday, April 2, 2015 11:03 AM > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [MNGEN] Rootsweb Heading > > I noticed it this morning and I will be moving my site as soon as possible.
