Dodge County now has a USGenWeb banner without the search bar. I am glad I found the letter on how to change the banner but was a little surprised that I didn't have to change any coding. However, I do like easy to use stuff. <g> Shirley On Sun, Apr 5, 2015 at 12:34 PM, Shirley Cullum <[email protected]> wrote: > Here is the letter that explains how to change the banner. That isn't a bad trade off though. I mean, we used to display "Hosted by Rootsweb" graphics or say thank you to them for the webspace. The banner eliminates the need to do that. Here is the letter that explains how to change the banner. Maybe it will work... Dear USGenWeb coordinators, For those of you with pages hosted on RootsWeb.com we wanted to give you an update on our plan for including a small masthead at the top of hosted pages on RootsWeb. We love being able to host your page and other pages that help the family history community so much, and adding this small masthead to acknowledge our hosting service allows us to continue to be able to offer this free hosting service as well as other services. The mastheads will be included on pages as early as May 21st. The standard masthead can be viewed here: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/rootsweb/samples_mastheads/masthead_General.jpg As a USGenWeb coordinator you will also have the option to use a USGenWeb specific masthead. It can be viewed here: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/rootsweb/samples_mastheads/masthead_USGenWeb.jpg To get the USGenWeb masthead on your page instead of the standard one all you need to do is place a file named 'banner_select' in your public_html directory. It should contain the text 'USGENWEB' (all caps and without the quotation marks) and nothing else. <snip> On Sun, Apr 5, 2015 at 12:20 PM, Joy Fisher via <[email protected]> wrote: > ARRRGH Just tried adding that file and it does not work anymore > > > On Sunday, April 5, 2015 10:09 AM, Genealogy via <[email protected]> > wrote: > > > Mike > > I could only find one county with the USGenWeb/Rootsweb banner. I would be very interested in this. By us placing code into the html it would lead one to expect that it is optional for us. It isn’t. After seeing Joy’s note on bad html, I played around with both the code they use for the two different banners. It ‘appears’ they look for </head> and insert code before it, or <Body> and insert code before it, and failing those two, </html> or </body> but I quit after awhile as I thought it was a waste of time and I have lots of other stuff I could be doing. It would surprise me if there is code that we insert not them. Bryant, yes, that’s what I found as far as linking. So far all they are doing is inserting the banner with their links and they aren’t touching any of our code. On my two North Dakota counties, the USGenWeb/Rootsweb Banner has been on them since they started this a few years ago. As far as I know, the banner with their search box is fairly recent. Incidently, their search box is messed up. When you enter a first name the results say last name and vice versa. I’m going to experiment with Laverne’s idea of getting it on the bottom. That way it will be very close to my external links blurb. Putting the links blurb on top is something I’m not in favor of. It is Pine County. I have never seen this one before. It is part of the Rootsweb plug in code. But they only apply a link to the Rootsweb image and the Ancestry image linking to both. They do not add a link to the USGenWeb image. After looking at county websites, the ones that are using the USGenWeb/RW banners do not have the search engine in them. The ones that are using the RW banner alone do have the search engine. I will check with RW on Monday to see what we need to do in order to have the USGenWeb banner on all county websites. Shirley
