Hi list I am searching for any information about the Hodges family in Fairbault Co., MN. There is a John, and John Sr,. a Charles H. listed as C. H. in 1870 census, a George and a couple of others as heads of households or living in the homes. This family is all born in Maine. John Sr. is listed as Josiah in both Maine 1850, and Michigan 1860 census. Charles H. Hodges is my gg grandfather and Josiah is my ggg frandfather. Josiah is married to Nancy Hart and Charles is married to Mary Ellen Armstrong, Mary Ellen Armstrong Hodges goes by the name of Ellen. Her mother and daughter and granddaughter were all Mary Ellen's. Also interested in the Armstrong family. Mary Ellen Armstrongs parents were said to be George Armstrong and Mary Ellen Cline or Kline. I believe the name is spelled Kline because of the stories that have passed down through the generations. It is said that she was a small German woman. So the spelling Kline makes sense to me. George Armstrong lived to be almost 100 years old. He was born about 1813 in England and died about 1823 in Unknown. The family story about him is that at 98 years old he planted hoed and harvested a 1/2 acre of onions which he sold. The story about his wife Mary Ellen is that she faught off an Indian with hot cornmeal mush. By throwing it at him by the spoonfull. Don't know how true these stories are but they have passed down for at least five generations. Any information on these families would be greatly appreciated. Deloris

Bonnet Prairie was one of the very early Norwegian Lutheran settlements in this area. Records for the oldest part of the original cemetery are missing. About 10 years ago I copied the information on the stones that remain and made a map of this section. The old Norwegian Lutheran church, just a short distance down the road, was damaged by fire a few years ago. The church has been enlarged a bit and is still in use after about 155 years. Hope this is of interest.

The name Fromdal/Fromdahl is one that I am familiar with. There were 4 known brothers that emigrated from the farm Frondal, Aurland parish, Sogn, Norway: 1) Ivar Jonsen Frondal (born 1804) emigrated with his family in 1854. I did have some notes on this branch but can not locate them at the present. 2) Johannes Jonsen/Johnson Fromdal (24 Nov. 1808 - 23 Feb. 1906) settled in the Tn. Otsego, Columbia Co., Wis c. 1858. There were 10 known children. 3) Jon (John) Jonsen/Johnson Fromdal (9 Mar. 1817 - 2 Dec. 1898) emigrated c. 1845, settling in Tn. Otsego, Columbia Co., Wis. There were also 10 known children in this family. 4) Ole Jonsen/Johnson Fromdal (6 June 1822 - 4 Jan. 1913) He was married but w/o children and is buried in the same cemetery as his brothers Jon & Johannes. Butler (Botolf J) Fromdal (born 1838) was the son of Johannes J Fromdal and did serve in the Civil War. You were searching for a 'William' Fr! omdal that was born in Wisconsin. William was not a name familiar to this family and wonder if you have further information. The name Fromdal does appear on the older cemetery markers but most of the family used the name Johnson which adds to the confusion. I do remember hearing that there were relatives of the Frondal/Fromdal/Fromdahl family that were in the Minnesota-Dakota areas. I hope this will be of some help.

You may have this data by now, but I find a small entry in a book published in 1977, "Faribault County 1855-1976. A Panorama". There is a plat map of Walnut Lake Township (103N Range 25W), with the following info: from page 56-57: "Walnut Lake Township took its name from the lake on its southern border. The lake was a favorite summer resort in the early days, as it had been prior to white settlement. It had been a favorite summer spot for Indians, especially the Winnebagos whose teepees were often seen on the banks. Daniel James Ackerman took the first claim in this township on the northeast side of the lake in 1856. Another early settler was Dr. R. R. Foster in whose honor nearby Foster Township was named. The village of Marengo was once planned here but never developed. A village called Walnut Lake sprang into being on the northwest side of the lake and flourished with hotels, post office, school, several stores, dwellings and a blacksmith shop. This was a popular stage stop for persons hunting lands to the west. There are no traces of this settlement remaining with the possible exception of a small cemetery not far from the old village site. The 1860 census included this ! township along with Clark and Barber and listed a total of 46 persons in all three. In 1880 the total in Walnut Lake township alone was 487. In a rare departure from most other townships, the town lost population from 1870 to 1880 because of what was called 'financial distress'. It was said that the 'heavy hand of the userer' descended upon these people and large mortgages with heavy interests drained the people of money and energy and they simply abandoned their claims." The lake itself (called North Walnut Lake, also called Lake Tazuka....must be an old name for it) is on the southern border of the township in sections 34 and 35. The township just to the south of Walnut Lake Twp. has a South Walnut Lake on the northern border. It's called Brush Creek Twp. There is no mention of a Walnut Lake or data on the village within the short write-up on Brush Creek Twp.

There's a museum in Winnebago (Winnebago Museum) that has copies of the old newspaper they used to have called the Winnebago Enterprise. I was able to do research on my own ancestors and they were able to provide copies of the obituaries and other little bits of info. You can reach them by phone at: 507-893-4660. They're address is 18 - 1st Ave NE PO Box 35, Winnebago, MN 56098. I'm not sure what they're hours are but if I remember right they're open only certain days/hours of the week and by appointment. They would definitely be worth checking out first. If this doesn't get you anywhere you might try contacting the County Recorder's Office at the Faribault County Courthouse in Blue Earth, MN. Their phone number is: 507-526-6252. If they can't help they probably can direct you to right department to talk to. I'm pretty sure that's the right place though as I did stop by there last summer for a certified copy of a birth certificate and inquired if they got many requests for ancestry research. She said they do. As for cemetaries in Winnebago there are three: Basey, Rosehill and Riverside. I think the one you might be calling the "Methodist Cemetary" is Basey Cemetary. You could try checking out http://www.rootsweb.com/~mnfariba/ and looking at the cemetaries linked there. They do have photos too. There's a wealth of info on this website. Good luck!
