Posted on: Dakota County Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mn/DakotaObits/10077 Surname: Harkins, McNellis, Eagan, Dougan ------------------------- St Paul Pioneer Press Tuesday, October 4, 1938 Death thrust a bitter cup into the hand of John Harkins for a few hours Monday; but it relented and he was reunited with his wife-the girl he had known since childhood. Mrs Harkins had succumbed at 3 AM Monday following a long illness. Bravely her husband went ahead with the funeral arrangements. By evening they were completed and he sat down to rest and talk to friends. About 7:00 PM, a neighbor brought in some foodstuffs and Mr Harkins offered a grateful "Thank you". Those were his last words. The doctor said his death was due to a heart attack. Mr and Mrs Harkins, 79 and 80 years old respectively, were born on adjoining farms near Inver Grove in Dakota Co. Raised and educated together, they were married in 1883. They lived in St Paul for the last 45 years, their home being at 842 Ashland Ave. Mr Harkins worked 26 years with the old St Paul Fas and Light Co and was chief engineer when he retired. Next, her was in business with his son Thomas J Harkins, until about ten years ago. Both he and Mrs Harkins took an active interest in the affairs of St Luke's Church. They are survived by six children; Thomas J, George J, Mrs Leo Maloy, Mrs Hugo Tessman, and Mrs Harold Vosges, all of St Paul, and William J of San Francisco. Mrs Harkins also is survived by a sister, Mrs Julia Masterson of Los Angeles. Funeral services will take place at 9:00 AM Thursday in St Luke's Church, Summit Ave and Lexington Parkway. Burial will be at Inver Grove.
I have lots of Brown information. I am in contact with another Brown line that lived in this area as well. My Browns are the children of Samuel Brown & Mary Hart: Solomon, Jeremiah, Mary, John Wesley, Lydia Ann (Carli) Samuel Fletcher, Wilson, Florence, Welsley and Nathaniel Reeder. Samuel had one child with his first wife, Emily Renshaw : Joseph Renshaw Brown, the noted pioneer, trader and land speculator and politician. The other Brown line, I don't have, but I have a contact. We have one thing in common: We're related to Dakota Chief Wapasha (Wabasha). John Wesley Brown in my case, married Mary Mooers<Hazen Mooers + Grey Cloud Woman II (aka Margaret Aird) < James Aird + Mahpiyahotawin (Grey Cloud Woman)<Chief Wapasha I. Joseph Renshaw Brown married Susan Freniere who was related to Little Crow, Wabasha and supposedly, Sacajawea. Please contact me with details regarding your line, even if you don't see an immediate connection. My ancestors lived in the area during this same time, so I can keep an eye out for your people if I know more about who they are. Sonja Aird, Almquist , Authier, Bouchard, Brown, Campbell, Doherty, Erno, Hofbauer, Hovland, LaPointe, LaRocque, McCollum, Mooers, Payer, Robertson, Ross, Schoolcraft, Shingledecker, Ullmann; Chiefs Wabasha, Mamongazida & Waubojeeg.

Posted on: Dakota Co. Mn Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mn/Dakota/10637 Surname: ------------------------- Hello Uwe: My great-grandather had also owned the same Hotel. My great grandfather was John Doffing. The St. John's Hotel was torn down many years ago(around 1980, I think). I am interested in the Kleis family. I alway thought they were from the Prum or Schonecken area of Germany. My great granmother was a Gores who lived in that area. There are Kleis descendants in the area today. I am a local historian/genealogist and am interested in genealogy for the most. I have some pictures of the St. John's Hotel. It was originally built in the 1880's but burned down about 1900. It was rebuilt and sometime in that time period I believe John Kleis owned the building. I also have obituaries of the Kleis family. I think one of the daughters of the John or Nick Kleis operated another hotel. Do you live near Schoenecken. At one time a person named Honny(Johan) Niederprum worked as a laborer at the St. John's hotel. He lleft his personal papers with my grandmother and I promised my grandmother that I would locate the relatives of Honny and return the papers to them. Anyway, I would like to hear from you. Posted on: Dakota Co. Mn Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mn/Dakota/10633 Surname: ------------------------- Hi: When I entered the data for the Naturalization Intents, I copied everything that it listed: Christian Wolf, born Germany, 1842; Arrived at the port of New York on July 1868; Renounced citizenship of Germany; Declaration date- Apr. 2, 1875, recordefd on page 562 of Vol. One For finding Christian you can try two things--check the New York Passenger lists(on microfilm for July of 1868 or you can locate the Series Germans to America and check the indexes. I believe that series is close to 80 volumes. One warning is that sometimes the date of arrival is inccorrect, especially when the person filed his intent several years after his arrival, but you have to hope that is not the case. Good Luck Bob Olson
Posted on: Dakota Co. Mn Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mn/Dakota/10632 Surname: ------------------------- Hello: Just some comments on the Beissel's, etc. The Fickers left a large number of descendant in the area. The original progenitors of the Fickers are buried at New Trier, but there is not much left of the original stone, I had found pieces of it when I helped replot the cemetery a few years back. One of the daughters of the original Ficker was the wife of a Mathias Doffing, whose older son Conrad left tons of descendants in the Colwich, Kansas area. There were also a couple of male branches of the Ficker family and one descendant moved up north and changed the spelling to Fueger or Feuger. The Beissel family is very large and I understand that one or more persons are working on the family. At one time I hired a researcher in Germany to carry the family back a generation or so. The Wiederholt's appear to have came originally from Bickenroede near Heuthen in Thuringia. There were apparently other families that originated in the same area in Germany that settled in Dickeyville and the surrounding area and some like the Ginthers, Kaiser and other went to the Miesville area, possibly in groups. Families like the Stitz, Eckert, and Schaffer's also originated in the same area. When I compiled the data for the New Trier Origin Series I had planned on pinpointing origins so that future reseachers could locate the origins via LDS records or whatever. At this time I am constantly searching for origins of New Trier families and their descendants, but mostly focusing on Luxembourg at this point. For any further queries, please contact me and I will give it a stab, as long as it is in the New Trier-Hastings and surrounding areas. Bob

Hi Hanna, South St. Paul (my birthplace) has always been in Dakota Co. Dakotah County was one of the original Minnesota Territory counties and has been around for a long time. It originally covered much more territory: at one time it extended all the way from the Mississippi River west into what later became the state of So. Dakota. Eventually, it was divided into many other counties. Check out: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~mngenweb/mnterr.htm> to see the original county structure of the Minnesota Territory 1849-1851. Grey Cloud Island is in Washington Co. which was also one of the original Minnesota Territorial counties. Part of it is an island formed by the Mississippi River and it lies adjacent to Cottage Grove and St. Paul Park and across the river from Inver Grove Heights. The river is the dividing line between Dakota and Washington Counties which, on some maps, may not be readily noticeable. Hope this helps.
