James was born 28Apr1869 in Osnabruck, Stormont County, Ontario. He moved from Osnabruck to Dundas, Rice County, MN on 15Oct1878 (became a US citizen in 1880) and moved to the Fort Ripley area in 1882. He married (first) Mary Amelia CLELAND (21 Mar 1863-12May1956 d/o William Thomas CLELAND and Catherine Urania ORR) on 8Jan1896 in Fort Ripley. They had at least five children (Clifford James, Thomas L., Edward Mural, Gertrude E. and Genevieve Ida) and were divorced 23Feb1909. He married (second) Emma L. HARRIS (24Aug1860-11Feb1931 d/o Seth F. HARRIS and Polly Jane BURRIS). James died about 27 March 1914 in Brainerd and was a hotel keeper in Brainerd at that time. His funeral was held at the Methodist Church in Brainerd and was then taken by train to Fort Ripley for burial in Oak Hill Cemetery.
