I am trying to learn more about my TOWERS ancestors who settled in Brainerd in 1900. Is there a Historical or Genealogogy Society which might have information? They worked for the railroad. They are buried in Evergreen Cemetery. Does anybody have the address for there? Thanks, Nancy < [email protected] >

Hi all! ...I want to thank you all for all the wonderful suggestions and help. And I wanted to update you on what I've been able to find. :) ...Basically, from many different sources I've come up with a tentative family group, of who my great grandfather's family was: William Franklin "Frank" Hathaway (born: abt. 1850 in Indiana, died 1914 Crow Wing Co., MN) m. Alice L. Harris (born: July 1858 in Mellrose, Jackson Co., WI, died: ???) Their Children: - Mintie Maude - b. 26 sep 1880, Knapp, Dunn Co., WI, died: Aug. 1, 1966 Brainerd, MN. Source: Funeral records. Have sent for obituary. - Byron - b. 1882, MN? WI?, died: 1884, burried in Oakland Cem., Crow wing Co. (1900 census stated that one child of Alice's was not living. I found him buried near Frank hathway, I'm guessing is his father? - Jesse Gaylord - (my gr-grandfather, b. 28 June 1884/85, maybe Brainerd, or WI, died: Australia) - Abbie Lenora "Nora" - b. June 8, 1886, Brainerd, MN, died: ?? - May Algona - Aug. 28, 1888, Brainerd, MN, died: ?? - Irma A. - b. Dec. 1893, Brainerd, MN, died: Sept. 10, 1906 --------------------------------------------------------------------- ...Ok, this is my putting all the pieces together and think I've come up with his family... However, I don't have proof yet... ...Grandma remembered her Aunt Maude and Uncle Dave Wadsworth.. and I've found them through funeral records in Brainerd, and marriage records. I've sent for their obituaries at the Brainerd library. But so far nothing states that Jesse is a brother or anything like that. Her funeral records do state that Frank and Alice are her parents, so circumstantially I'm sure this is Jesse's family... but lack proof. ...I've sent away for Irma's obit. too... hoping it will give me a clue about the family... ...I was wondering, is there a MN census in between the Federal Census dates? Is there an 1895 census? Perhaps he would still be with the family then... he'd have been only about 10 years old then... ...Also, if Frank and Alice were divorced, where would that record be kept? They were divorced probably between 1893 and 1900. ...Well, I wanted to update you all, and see if you had any more wonderful suggestions for me? I was able to find so much from everything you told me before. Angel - Soundexes may be the item of worth in the search for your elusive Jesse HATHAWAY. Since he was born 1884, and the 1890 census does not exist for the most part, I think concentrating on finding him with Soundex microfilms for 1900 is a good bet. You can search a whole state at once, I would start with Minnesota. I think the 1900 census gave a bit more information that other years, it might be very helpful to search the surrounding states also, should he prove not to be in Minnesota. You say you have searched the 1900 census - was this the Brainerd census ? Or was this the Soundex for Minnesota ? He might have been in another city nearby, but not included in the Brainerd enumeration. He might have been at a relatives home for a bit, or employed elsewhere. At 16, this is possible, especially as he was a male. Looks like the only male of the family ? Perhaps there was an uncle he stayed with - unknown to you. If and when you find him, it will be of note to see who he was living with, and see if there might be a relation, even if it just says 'Border' for his relationship. I take it there is a Family History Center nearby - you ordered these films from there ? I am searching for a GREENWOOD, born 1882, but we know where the family was, we just don't know where HE ended up. He was the father of my husband's dad, there in Brainerd, 1923, but he disappeared after the birth, and only surfaced once or twice again. I have to wonder if he fathered other children. So, I am searching for his death site and hopefully an obituary. So, I am searching for Death records, you for Birth records. Something I have advised people to do when they request Obituaries from the cities I am registered with here in Oklahoma, is for them to CALL the individual cemteries in the target city, and ask for all the listings for the surname you seek. You never know what will come of it, and the folks at these businesses, are usually the most cordial, helpful people you could imagine. They are just short-handed there at the business office, and if a service is in session, or some crisis, you will have to call back. Brainerd is large enough to have several, but one or two calls will let you know which are the oldest, and likely to be burial sites for your HATHAWAY or possibly WADSWORTH surnames. Sounds like an overwhelming task, but I think it worthy of a call or two at least. That is how I located my GREENWOODs in Bernice, Nebraska last year, found nearly all the family but my target. When the 1930 census comes out, I will be ready to order Soundexes for about 10 states surrounding Minnesota if I haven't lucked into him by that time. I think Illinois, California and Texas have BMD records online. Might as well search them. Did you get lucky with the Social Security Death Index ? Sounds like perhaps not. I actually found about 3 relatives, distant, but related, at <www.findagrave.com>. Will never forget my astonishment ! Do you know where he was married ? There is surely a microfilm for births, marriages or deaths for Crow Wing county, in the early years. Try searching at <www.familysearch.org> placename search for Crow Wing, Minnesota records. Maybe even Brainerd ? Another project I would attempt is ordering the Soundex for Minnesota for 1920 for WADSWORTH. Possibly even HATHAWAY. That was the last place you knew Maude WADSWORTH existed, and you never know who might show up in the household ! Maybe an unmarried sister, living with Maude, with an age, and birthplace of her father, and mother. Enough to chew on - LMKnow how it is going - Meg GREENWOOD / Oklahoma, USA
Hello all! :) ...I'm a newbie, so please forgive me if I ask the wrong way. :) ...I have a very allusive relative. His name is Jesse Gaylord Hathaway, my great grandfather. I'm trying to find out who his parents were. I've already tried everything I know to do... He was born in Brainerd (according to family stories and his Australian death certificate). I recently got a copy of his WWI draft reg. card which gave his birth date as June 28, 1884. My gr. grandmother was a very secretive woman and left no trace whatsoever about her husband's family. I sent away for his birth records and found none. I sent away for the census records (1880, 1900) and did not find his family. Grandma insists that he had five sisters (not sure of their ages in comparison to his). She remembered as a child visiting her aunt (approx. 1925-1936). Her name was Maude (Hathaway) Wadsworth and she was married to a man named Dave. She said they lived in Brainerd and that they would take their crops up to Minneapolis to sell/swap for staples... ...All that to say, "help!" anyone have any ideas? I was thinking that if Grandma was right about her Aunt Maude, that perhaps, they would have been married there in Brainerd. But I wouldn't have any idea what year to even begin looking... Would marriage certificates of that era have information about the parents or anything like that... (I'm rambling) ...Again, forgive me for my "newbie-ness", would love any help I can get, even if it's just to say that I'm way off base. :) Thanks, Kristine ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | Family History: | | Alden-VT,NY,MN/ Denney/Denny-VA,KY,IN,OR/ Farwell-NY,MN/ | | Hake-York Co. Greetings from your friendly MNCROWWI list administrator. :-D This posting is to remind the subscribers that, despite the low volume, they are, indeed, still subscribed to the MNCROWWI list at RootsWeb. I've selected the option to prepend [MNCROWWI] to the Subject to make messages for this list stand out a bit. We currently have 10 digest subscribers and 31 list subscribers. I'd like to take this opportunity to make sure that everyone knows about the Crow Wing County Genealogical and Historical Societies' web site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~mncwcghs/ The Historical Society section has info on what resources are available in their research facility. The Genealogical Society section has some data that has been recently scanned or transcribed by some of the members. One more reminder - replies to messages on this list will, by default, go to the original sender, not to the list. If you want to send your reply to the list, you need to use 'reply to all' or whatever feature in your mail program will send it your reply to the 'To' address. -- John Van Essen, Fridley, MN (formerly of Brainerd, MN) <[email protected]> Crow Wing Queries: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mn/CrowWing Crow Wing Research Tips: http://www.cpl.umn.edu/~jve/crowwing/research.htm

We recently posted a couple of new items about MINNESOTA Poorhouses on our website called The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com Well...so MANY of you wrote to us for information that we decided to spend a couple of days doing research. We found that the Minnesota Historical Society has poorhouse records for 16 (SIXTEEN!!!!) counties. They include: Beltrami, Blue Earth, Crow Wing, Goodhue, Hennepin, Houston, Kittson, Koochiching, Lyon, Redwood, Rice, St. Louis, Washington, Wilkin, Winona, and Yellow Medicine. Here is how you can find the information. When you go to the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on OTHER STATES, then on MINNESOTA on the table of states. When you get to the MINNESOTA page (click REFRESH on your browser if you have been to the site recently) ... scroll down to the Records section where you will find a yellow link that says: LIST of MINNESOTA HISTORICAL SOCIETY POORHOUSE HOLDINGS by county. But the information does not stop there. When I started my website it was my hope that I could teach people how to search for poorhouse records and that they would then submit the information they found to The POORHOUSE STORY website ... which, as the subtitle indicates, is meant to be a clearinghouse. Unfortunately, more people have wanted me to give them a fish than have wanted to learn to fish. (Sigh) There are just too many counties in this country for me (even with the help of a handful of very dedicated volunteers) to do this research by myself. However, in Minnesota you are fortunate to have some excellent GenWeb and other sites on-line. So there is another page on our website ... the one you should consult if the MHS does NOT have holdings for the county in which you are interested. (You will find it linked off the page which lists the MHS holdings.) We invite you to USE it!!!! Let's go on a Treasure Hunt to see how many poorhouse records we can ... collectively ... locate in Minnesota. Your participation in this effort may help to preserve an important part of our genealogical history which is otherwise still at risk of being lost ... because people who have those records may not know of our interest in them. Thanks for your interest. Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
