The names seem to be Borders or Bordens. I message I sent a few minutes ago did not send. So will repeat it. I have a picture of a collapsed bridge. It was built about 1916 over a narrows in Long Lake. It went down in 1917 due to the ice break-up. Prior to that time people would ford this narrows in wagons and even cars. I know it was a harrowing trip because my Grandmother told of going over it in 1916 in a car. On the back of the picture I have seen is writen, "The Borders (Borden)Family drowned at this crossing while trying to ford, in 1900. Missed the shallows in the dark and the storm . The wagon box floated and the baby was found alive in it." I did search the death notices for that time frame (before and after) at the Crow wing County Court House and didn't find the deaths of any multiple family members. Of any name. This narrows can be seen from highway #371 going north from Brainerd to Nisswa. Land is not visable but the you can tell where it would have been between two points of land in Long Lake. It is very shallow yet today. In the 1900 census there is record of Joel and Liddie Borders who live in the area of the narrows. Hope I haven't just confused your issue. Good luck. (At that time, this area was part of Cass County.) I have not yet tried to find an 1885 census for Cass County but I did find John W and his family in the 1905 twp 135-27 ED 22 (possibly 221) The "g" in Crow Wing co, MN. *may* be hiding a "1" in the ED. I photocopied the page but I REALLY wish I had access to a transcribed version because some of the names I can't even make guesses at. I haven't heard of any ties to Long Lake but bits and pieces slowly come together. Was this a BORDEN family? Do you have any first names? When they entered service they gave Crow Wing County, Minnesota as their home of record. Soldier: ROBERT WILLIAM LIEBEG Born: 1932 Date of loss: July 20, 1950. POW Soldier: ALVIN ELMER POTZ Born: 1927 Date of loss: April 23, 1951. MIA When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 27 families from Minnesota that have not been located. There are two families from Crow Wing County that has not been located. When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency. I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families.
