Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/RGB.2ACE/54.3 Message Board Post: In Earl Leaf's unpublished Compendium of Biography 19th Century Chisago County (2002) it says the following. (I quote, but please forgive any typos -- they are mine, not Earl Leaf's!) Thornton was born in 1826, died 22 Oct. 1890. He came to St. Croix falls in 1841, later resided in Amador Township at the head of the rapids. He later moved to Pine County. He signed up for duty in the 1st Regt. of Mounted Rangers, Co. M. He entered the service on 30 Dec. 1862 as a wagoner at age 43. According to the company roster, he deserted two days later, on 1 Jan 1863. I have never seen any other reference to his desertion and wonder if there might have been som unique circumstances connected with his entrance into the service. I doubt if he could later be elected a county commissioner if he was on record as being a deserter. His wife, Adelia Wolf, according to W. H. C. Folsom [see Fifty Years in the Northwest, recently republished in paperback form] was a "well-educated half-breed". She was born in 1830, died 12 Feb. 1872. She is buried in Sunrise Cemetery. Henry, born in 1846; and Charles, born in 1847, were the oldest children. The Charles Bishop listed just above* appears to have been Thornton's son, but the ages do not match up. The roster information gives his [Charles's] age as 18 when he entered the service. If he was born in 1847, that would make him only 15 when he enlisted, which would have been illegal, I believe. The 1865 state census lists as children Charles, Ellen, Frank, Harriet, Jeff Davis, Mary E. and W. H. The 1870 federal census gives the ages in the family: Thornton 47, Adelia 35, Ellen 17, Harriet 15, William 11, Jefferson 7. The value in 1870 of Thornton's real estate was listed as $1500, his personal property as $1000. An obituary states that Thornton was raised in Indiana, left home at 21 and lived several years in St. Louis. He was married in Pine County in 1842 to Delia Wolf, settled in Amador in 1846, went to Sunrise in 1859. In 1880 he moved to Pine County and died at his home there in 1890. There is no mention of his Civil War record. He served as Pine County Commissioner 1883-86 (from St. Croix Valley Old Settlers' Association obituary records, Vol. 4). (50 Years in the Northwest - W. H. C. Folsom, Minnesota in the Civil and Indian Wars, 1865 state census, 1870 federal census.) *About Charles Bishop it says: Charles joined the 1st Regt. of Mounted Rangers, Co. M [the same regiment and even the same company, I note, as his father is supposed to have joined!] 1 Dec. 1862 at the age of 18 from Sunrise, MN. He was discharged with the company when it disbanded in 1863. But according to the 1865 census he was still in the service so he must have joined some other unit following his discharge from the Mounted Rangers. He was born about 1844, but I have no record of his death or burial in the county. (Minnesota in the Civil and Indian Wars.)

Henry Bush had a small farm at the mouth of the Deer creek and built a large public house, wo stories high. This house burned down. He also established a ferry across the St. Croix. He had a large family of bright boys who loved the woods, and they roamed the forests freely until one of the number was lost. The rest of the boys came home as usual, but of the child they could give no account. The parents were distracted and searching parties were organized. The search proved fruitless. A year later the bones of the missing boy were found several miles away beside a big log where the little fellow had doubtless perished of starvation and exposure after becoming bewildered by the density of the forests.

Find the correct county and ask on that board, Jasper is not in Chisago county. It is in Pipestone County. Write to that board and see if you can get information there., Try this URL also http://www.rootsweb.com/~mnpipest/ Sue On 24 Jan 2002 08:37:48 -0700 inpe@k.lst.se writes: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.> > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/RGB.2ACE/59 > > Message Board Post: > > Can anyone tell me how I fond out if my uncle Martin Reinhold > Svensson born 11 nov 1888 in Sweden lived in 320 4th St E, Jasper, > MN 56144. > > Inger P > > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy > records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >

Sara married John SWENSON (Johan Svensson) before emigrating from Sweden (I have copy of photo of their house in Sweden). Mary married Andrew WALLMARK, who came to Chisago Co. in 1854 with his brother Otto WALLMARK. Otto married twice: Eva Maria Helena PETERSDOTTER (her brother was Jacob PETERSSON who married a HELIN) then Eva Danielsdotter PALMGREN. Otto's daughter married David ARNQUIST and they ran a store in Center City, I believe. My connection is via Andrew and Mary Wallmark, my great great grandparents. I would love to hear from any other descendants of these families, and I can supply family trees for Magnus Shaleen and Andrew and Otto Wallmark that go back to the 18th and even in one case 17th centuries in Sweden. Many thanks for your replies. Earl has been a GREAT help on our family history. I didn't realize he was already published. I will have to see if my library can do an inter-library loan (I live in BC, Canada). I'll send you another message with the information I have on Carl Johnson. There is no Charles or Carl Johnsons in the cemetery book that has those dates, do you have any other family member names so i can separate him from the 2 pages of Carl Johnsons in the book.
