    1. More POORHOUSE Information
    2. Poor House Lady
    3. We have just added to the story about the BROWN County Poor Farm (which we had previously published)a picture postcard of the building which we believe may have been recently demolished. The building is certainly not very beautiful...but it IS history. The contrast (which we show on the same page)between the 19th century and 20th century institutional architecture is quite striking! So...We would like to invite you to revisit The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses)at http://www.poorhousestory.com DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above)please click on POORHOUSES BY STATE and then click on MINNESOTA on the table of states. You will see the link to the page of pictures near the top of the page and marked with a big yellow NEW arrow. Note: If you have visited the IMINNESOTA page on our website recently, you may need to click REFRESH on your browser to see the new material.) There are some other pages on the site which may help you better understand poorhouses. They are all linked (to the left)off the homepage and include: HISTORY, LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS, and FEATURED ARTICLES. You may want to also review the ARCHIVED NEWSLETTERS to get an overview of what has been posted on the website and what some of our issues have been. The only way the material on the website will grow is through the suggestions and submissions of kind readers like you! So if you would like to e-mail me, PLEASE do so OFF-list using an e-mail link from our website. (I cannot maintain subscriptions to all the lists to which we make announcements.) Hope you enjoy the site! Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

    3. Posted on: Brown Co. Mn Obituaries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mn/BrownObits/10031 Surname: Stoltzenberg, Meyerding ------------------------- From the New Ulm Review of 30 APR 1886 DROWNED -- A sad case of accidental drowning occurred at Redstone last Friday afternoon. Mr. Albert Stoltzenberg, aged twenty years, was out in the Minnesota river in a boat, having a second boat attached to the one he occupied. The boat he was in being in a leaky condition he attempted to jump into the other boat and in so doing lost his balance and fell into the river, at once sinking to the bottom. Mr. Stoltzenberg was a harness maker by trade and until a few days previous to his drowning had worked at St. Peter. His parents reside at Redstone and he was spending a short vacation at home previous to going to work in this city. Mr. F. Meyerding, who knew Stoltzenberg well, says he was a good swimmer and that he must have been seized with cramps when he struck the water, else he would certainly have reached the shore, but a few feet distant. The body was recovered Sunday morning at the mouth of the Big Cottonwood river. Deceased was a most exemplary young man and his sudden death is indeed a sad blow to his parents.

They married 1866 in Racine Co WI. Isaac is the brother of my great great grandfather John F. Martine b. 1832 NY. Both came to Minnesota after 1866; John F. took his family to Rochester MN, and Isaac brought his to Brown Co MN, where he was to spend the rest of his life. He died in 1897. 3. Hi to all on the list. Looks like there's a new virus being passed around, so be careful with your email.. " Alarm bells have been going off at the antivirus companies. McAfee discovered a nasty new Internet worm "in the wild" on April 11, 2001 and traced its origin to New Zealand. They officially dubbed it W32/[email protected] Tell me more Symantec's Antivirus Research Center uncovered the new virus on the same day and decided to call it [email protected] Tell me more. F-Secure spotted the worm on its radar a day later and added it to their rogue's gallery as simply BadTrans. Tell me more.. Whatever you call it, this new email virus is a bad boy, with a password-stealing Trojan routine that could potentially cause a surprising amount of damage. 3. This article from the "Eastmans Online Genealogy Newsletter" ... http://www.rootscomputing.com ... http://www.rootsforum.com/newsletter.htm. ... may be of interest Thanks Dick Schweiss (List Admin.) Brown County, MN Mail List ... [email protected] - Ellis Island Online Database Are you looking for your ancestors' immigration records? If they arrived at Ellis Island between January 1892 and December 1924, you may soon be able to find their information online. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons) is developing the American Family History Immigration History Center at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. A grand opening and dedication of the facility is taking place April 17. The LDS Church and the Ellis Island Immigration Museum officially announced the History Center project on Oct. 28, 1998. However, work on the project had already been underway for five years and involved thousands of volunteers who had to sort through passenger records and ship manifests and enter them into a database. Officials had hoped to make the database available to the public late last year. However, like many such huge projects, the original projections slipped a bit. The online database is now scheduled to become available at the same time as the new center opens: April 17. According to the Ellis Island Foundation, 12,000 volunteer LDS Church members worked on the project and donated some 5.6 million hours to complete the 25 million entries in the extraction process. The church also devoted 20 full-time staff members and 35 missionaries to the project. "We're very grateful to have the expertise and generosity of the (LDS) church and its volunteers in the development of this very important and long-awaited family history resource," said Peg Zitko, director for public affairs at the foundation. The LDS Church's help "saved us considerable financial investment." This new computerized database will provide automated access to more than 22 million historic Ellis Island passenger records. However, the digitized records will only cover the period from January 1892 to December 1924 and will include only about 71 percent of the passenger arrivals during that period. Plans call for a future expansion of the project to include additional passenger years and records. The database contains information on aliens, U.S. citizens, crew members, deportees and even those who literally missed the boat. Traveler name, name of vessel, departure, ports of arrival and dates of arrival comprise the standard information to be available. Age, gender, marriage status, birthdate, place of birth and ethnicity is other information available on some entries. Do not confuse this new database with the "American Immigrant Wall of Honor" database that has been available for some time. The "American Immigrant Wall of Honor" database is a listing of all the names inscribed on the "American Immigrant Wall of Honor." The Wall honors all immigrants, not just those who were processed at Ellis Island. I even found John Alden listed in the "American Immigrant Wall of Honor" database. He arrived on the Mayflower in 1620, two hundred seventy-two years before Ellis Island first opened. This wall at Ellis Island is a memorial funded by private contributions. In order to have an ancestor's name inscribed on the "American Immigrant Wall of Honor" and also listed in the database, his or her descendants or some other person must pay $100. For a listing of a husband and wife, such as "John A. and Mary T. Smith," the charge is $200. Several "special name formats" are also available, with fees ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. All names are entered without verification of the information, so we must assume that errors exist. The new immigrants database that will go online this week is a very different offering from the "American Immigrant Wall of Honor." The new immigrants database will contain information extracted from original records, all without requirement for any payment of fees to "honor" these immigrants. The new database should contain very high quality genealogy information. Keep an eye for this new database to appear soon at: http://www.ellisisland.org

    3. Hello Everyone, I LOVE the the Brown County Historical Society. Darla, the research librarian was especially helpful and sent the info. fast. I found a family file and received a massive amount of information for $26.00 total. They sent me a file card with a detailed list of what was in the file so I could pick and choose what I wanted to copy. They charge .25 cents for each copy and will put as much information on a page as they can, like newspaper clippings and photos. You then can choose which photos you would like to have printed on the more expensive photo paper. The photo copies are great. I am very happy since they went online because I just found another file and can"t wait to get it. Debra
