There is a story that has been handed down from generation to generation in our family about some men who came to the residence where my great great grandparents Nicholas and Clara DeMuth were living in or near Mankato at the time, they asked if Clara could fix them a meal, which she did, the men sat down had there meal thanked their hosts and left. When Clara was clearing the table after the men left, she found silver dollars underneath each plate at the table where they had sat. A few days later the family heard about the bank robbery at Northfield, and my great great grandmother Clara was down at the train station in Mankato and saw some to the bandits that were being transfered up to Minneapolis and St. Paul, she supposedly recognized some of the men as those who had stopped and asked for a meal a few days prior. I have discovered two things while doing research on this, one my great great grandparents are listed on the 1875 Minnesota State Census in Mankato at this time, also, I just found out that there is a listing for a N. DeMatt on North 4th Street in the 1873-1874 Mankato City Directory. I know that by 1878-79 they were living in Minneapolis. What I am thinking is that my great great grandfather Nicholas DeMuth might have been working for someone (he was a famer from Luxembourg), at that time who might have had some property in or near Mankato where members of the James/Younger Gang had stopped to ask for a meal on their way to Northfield, if I am correct it would have happened on September 1 or 2, 1876. If there is anyone out there with any information about members of the James Younger Gang stopping at a family farm in or near Mankato. Please contact me! Any help would be appreciated!
