I have done this extensively with North and South Dakota newspapers, and in Minnesota used microfilm in the town library. http://sites.mnhs.org/library/content/interlibrary-loan There is a small fee for shipping and handling. I found a 1916 series of articles about my grandparents' elopement. Many more interesting tidbits in the articles than in a marriage certificate. Happy hunting.
