Author: randywend Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.minnesota.counties.blueearth/2075.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Russ, thanks for the info. And, yes, if you're able (no hurry) to send me the GIS showing the overlay of todays location, that would be neat. Email [email protected] I did happen to find some notes today dated Jan 2010 which I *think* came from the lady on the east coast who had ties to Robert Wardlaw. ----- The notes state: Robert Wardlaw kep the "Farmers Exchange Store" at the upper or souith end of the levee. He closed out his stock in the spring of 1858 and went into the lime business. Foot of Wardlaw's ravine was at or near the junction of the Winona and St. Peter railroad. This eventually became the Chicago and NorthWestern RR. Wardlaw had land "below town" (Mankato) at the mouth of the ravine that beared his name. Wardlaw had a store in the Wardlaw building in 1854-55 on Lot 1, Block 6. (Uriah Karmony was a clerk there that winter. Wardlaw's wife was Maria Antoinette (b: 1828...in Watertown NY?) who was the daughter of Theron and Lavina Persons. ----- Thanks, also, for the plat link. I'm going to compare it to google satellite view to get some idea of locations. Randy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If so; Heres a link to the (BLM GLO site)1854 U.S. Govt land office survey map showing Wardlaws house, store and field in section 32 just a couple of miles north of downtown Mankato. There's a ravine precisely at this point today. http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/details/survey/default.aspx?dm_id=111780&sid=k4a5iaku.eis#surveyDetailsTabIndex=1 I have self-created GIS maps showing exactly where this point is in regards to modern day roads, etc. if you need to see where this lies. If so, kick me an email address and I'll send you a .jpg snip off the map. And yes you're right...it is just off old 22 (Riverfront Dr.) Russ Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: randywend Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.minnesota.counties.blueearth/2075.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Russ, thanks for the info. A lady from the east coast had ties to WOOD family and had inquired. A few of the WOOD brothers were killed in Jackson MN in the Sioux uprising, and if I recall correctly there was a WOOD relative in Mankato. I forget her connection to Wardlaw but I think it was the ravine area and the individual (surname WOOD) had a store at the foot of Wardlaw's ravine at one time apparently. I had lived in Mankato years ago and never did recall ever hearing of Wardlaw's ravine. I was thinking it may have been down by LeHillier area on south end of town maybe. But, perhaps it was way up on the north end on old 22 on edge of town. I know there are some hills along that stretch. As it turns out, the lady out east was planning a trip here a few months after my initial query/post about Wardlaw ravine, then she dropped off the edge of the earth and haven't heard from her since. She was going to visit the Jackson area also to follow up on WOOD history. But, at least now you appear to have confirmed that there was in fact a Wardlaw with a tie to Mankato. Thanks for taking the time to post! Randy Wendel, Bloomington Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
