    2. Tried this a few years ago and trying again.... Hale Saenger HANSON was born in 1913 and married Vivian MONTGOMERY in 1935. They lived in Lake Crystal, Blue Earth where he ran a TV/radio repairshop, a produce/feed store, and was a Justice of the Peace. They moved to Portland, Oregon in 1960. I'm curious to find out some information about him before his marriage. When he died in 1996 he made mention of possible children before his marriage to Vivian. Thanks Pete Hanson

He died in 1869 in Blue Earth County on 9 March,1869(buried in Sugar Grove Cemetery). He may have been living with his children David and Jane before he died, but I do not know when William moved to Blue Earth County(William and his family migrated from Jefferson County, Ohio, to Vigo County, Indiana.). Jane married Wesley Wolfe, but they did not have any children. As far as I know, David never married and is buried in LeSueur County, Minnesota(died on 22 January, 1886). Wesley Wolfe died on 5 February, 1917, and his wife died on 4 October, 1920, both in Blue Earth County. Are there any family records in Blue Earth County regarding these people? I am hoping to find some mention(dates, locations, etc.) of William Revenaugh's father, John. Should I contact the Blue Earth County Historical Society? Thank you. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: k79lawrence Surnames: DeMuth Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.minnesota.counties.blueearth/2132/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I was wondering if there are any descendants of any land owners who owned property down in Mankato at the time of the James/Younger Gangs Bank Raid at Northfield. There is a story that has been handed down from generation to generation in our family about some men who came to the residence where my great great grandparents Nicholas and Clara DeMuth were living in or near Mankato at the time, they asked if Clara could fix them a meal, which she did, the men sat down had there meal thanked their hosts and left. When Clara was clearing the table after the men left, she found silver dollars underneath each plate at the table where they had sat. A few days later the family heard about the bank robbery at Northfield, and my great great grandmother Clara was down at the train station in Mankato and saw some to the bandits that were being transfered up to Minneapolis and St. Paul, she supposedly recognized some of the men as those who had stopped and asked for a meal a few days prior. I have discovered two things while doing research on this, one my great great grandparents are listed on the 1875 Minnesota State Census in Mankato at this time, also, I just found out that there is a listing for a N. DeMatt on North 4th Street in the 1873-1874 Mankato City Directory. I know that by 1878-79 they were living in Minneapolis. What I am thinking is that my great great grandfather Nicholas DeMuth might have been working for someone (he was a famer from Luxembourg), at that time who might have had some property in or near Mankato where members of the James/Younger Gang had stopped to ask for a meal on their way to Northfield, if I am correct it would have happened on September 1 or 2, 1876. If there is anyone out there with any information about members of the James Younger Gang stopping at a family farm in or near Mankato. Please contact me! Any help would be appreciated! I don't dispute that the corruption and theft by the Indian agents and the breaking of the treaties between the government and the Sioux were the major causes of the uprising. One of my great grandfathers was one of a number of young unmarried men who went around to farms in the area to check on farms in Nicollet County after the families had fled to Mankato for safety during the uprising. He was present in Mankato at the execution. Others of my ancestors, my great-great-grandparents and three of their children were living in Linden township of Brown County. They had gotten along well with Indians in the vicinity, giving them help when they were asked. On one occasion my g-g-grandmother and the children hid out in the well when Indians they did not know came around. Their farm was not harmed, but one of their neighbors was killed around that time. The family retreated into New Ulm and my g-g-grandfather was one of the volunteer militia serving in the 1st and 2nd Battles of New Ulm. Later, in the fall of 1863, he enlisted in the 2nd Minnesota Cavalry regiment, which was initially assigned to the Mississippi River campaigns, but whose orders were changed to hold it back for service on the Minnesota frontier. It is hard to know where to begin with corrections. For one thing, the Wounded Knee massacre occurred on 28 December 1890, some 28 years AFTER the Dakota uprising!!! Some 303 Indians were convicted by the military tribunal in the 498 trials that were held. Those who were tried had been captured in Minnesota or had surrendered in Minnesota. They were not marched from Nebraska. President Lincoln reviewed these convictions and commuted the death sentences of those whom he found had not committed acts of warfare against the U.S. 39 were sentenced to death, with one granted a reprieve. Feelings in Minnesota were mixed, many settlers wanted the Indians punished for revenge, but also there those such as Episcopal Bishop Henry Whipple who publicly campaigned for leniency. These facts are well known from contemporary sources and later works, the interpretation you gave is not taught in schools because it is wrong.
