Author: keithaleckson Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.minnesota.counties.benton/176.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have a relative that wrote of Knut Carlson in her biography of the town. Here's the link on the Benton County web site. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mnbenton/glendorado.htm Here's a census record for Glendorado in 1930, as well. Their names show up there. http://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/mn/benton/1930/ Here's an excerpt from the biography describing the Carlsons. "Down the long crooked drive-way east from Fords lived the Knute Carlson family. The Carlson place had been homesteaded by Knute's grandfather. When I first recollect the Carlson place (as far back as I remember) the brick house with two nice porches, was a place where everyone was welcome - young and old. Knute and Elisa lived here with their children, Otto, Ellen and Ellevina - twins, Nellie, Margeret, and Elliot. Elsa Maria, Besta (Knute's mother) lived in a pretty little gray stucco house placed among the apple trees behind the big brick house. Yes, and a hired man. Carlson's always had a young man working for them. Elisa was a Norwegian girl. After she came to America, she was instrumental in getting four of her neighborhood boys to America. Knute sent passage money to each of the boys. When the first had labored long enough to pay his passage, he found work elsewhere and Knute would send for the next one. Thus he enabled four of the Spangrud boys to come to America. They were Harold, Oscar, Sigrud, and Ludvig. Even after they had left Carlsons, they were always welcome visitors when they came back from time to time. These young men seemed to play an important role during the time I grew up. I remember them all so vividly. After the Spangrud boys had worked there, there were several other hired men that we learned to know well like Bill Abrahamson, Alfred Johnson, and Hubert Rathbun. (Elisa even painted and fixed up Besta's house so Hubert could live there with his wife, Rose and little girl, Gladys.) My brother, Arnold, worked at Carlson's often too. I remember Knute well, he died about two months after Grandpa in the spring of 1932. Elisa was left with a large farm and house full of little children to take care of. She did an exceptional job. I think Elliot was about four years and Otto, the oldest was about fifteen when Knute died. Yet Elisa managed the farm and enabled the children to go on to school, high school, and college, if they wished. I went into a great detail when telling about this family, because I doubt if there was a day in the first twenty years of my life that our family was not in contact with some member of their family." The Carlson's were apparently close with my relative's family. Hope you find the information helpful. Keith Aleckson Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: kps_46635 Surnames: Fairbanks and Brunette Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.minnesota.counties.benton/175/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am looking for any information on William B. (Babcock) Fairbanks born Berlin, Mass 1812 died Michigan City, Indiana 1876. As a young man lived on a farm in Saint Lawrence Countynty, New York later relocated to Crow Wing, Minn. married Nancy Annette aka Nanette Brunette a Ojibwe Indian about 1850. I am very interested in tracking him from about 1830 when his father Ephraim died until 1850. I know that he served in the Army sometime from 1846-1848 in the Mexican War. I do not know exactly where he was mustered in. I beleived he traveled from Waddington, New York with relatives that were followers of Joseph Smith the founder of the Mormon Church. I believe he may have resided in Kirtland, OH then to Michigan City, then to Jackson County, MO. and then to Nauvoo, IL. after that period of time I believe he joined the Army served in the Mexican War and was mustered out at Fort Gaines in Minnesota about 1849. After that I have traced him in Morrison, Ottertail, and Becker Counties in MN. William Fairbanks and Nathan Richardson built the first hotel in Little Falls. William ran for Sheriff of Benton County, was a Justice of the Peace, and was district attorney in Little Falls. I have a picture that was made from a Tin Type that was taken in the 1860's. In 1868 the family returned to and settled in Michigan City, IN. Any Information would be appreciated. She was a second cousin of my grandfather, both descendants of Hans CHRISTENSEN and Eldri JENSDATTER of the farm Hagen in Fåvang in Ringebu. I found that Otto Thomas CARLSON died in Benton Co. in 1994. His sister, Ellen Gertrude, died December 2005 in Fresno, CA, the widow of Kenneth William SANGER.
