My grandmother was Marion Jochem Ostby from Coutts. My parents were Dutch and Charlie Bell. I am a southern Alberta decendant too! Your great grandfather Jacob was one of my Mom's favorite great uncles. He gave her the nickname Dutch. Anyway I don't have a lot of info on the Jochems. Have been trying to find the ship that Adam and his wife came over on in the early 1840's from Germany. If you have any info on that I would greatly appreciate it if you would share what you know. I do have some Census info and other information I have collected about the family while they lived in Mequon, Wisconson and the Cederburg area before moving to Sauk Rapids. Adam Jochem, Jacobs father, left Wisconson in 1884 because he was going to Sauk Rapids to run (own?) a Brewery. I have never been able to find any info on the Brewery but I imagine that it was wiped out in 1886 when Sauk Rapids was hit by a cyclone. If your interested in any info I have just let me kno! w. Martin Schmidt came in 1881, and his Father George was with him for a time. Catherine (Katie) Schmidt (maiden name Behnke and her Mother's maiden possibly Lieser) came in 1883 with 5 of her children. Family lore says they left 6 children in Prussia likely with relatives. They had 10 more children in Minnesota. On the early census records they were going by Smith. After most of the children were raised by 1910 the census records showed as Schmidt for Martin and Catherine. They were apparently farmers in Gilmanton, and seems by 1920 had retired and were living in St Cloud were they passed away. I'm fairly sure they were Catholics. I can't be sure exactly where they came from in Prussia, but on one of the children's Naturalization records there's an indication she was born in Gross Zirkwitz. Family lore has it that likely after Martin left in 1881 and before Catherine immigrated she may have! been living with her family in Prague. This was a very large family and I'm hoping someone can share more about them. I know a lot of the children ended up in Oregon and Washington, but would seem likely there would still be some ancestors in Minnesota. Sorry big blunder, the year was 1880!! Sorry, Eighteen-Eighty
I would like to hear from others that have ancestors that came from Sweden to the St. Cloud area in c. 1800? I would like to know their route and anything concerning their trip from Sweden to Minnesota. What port did they arrive in? How did they get to Minnesota, did they go through Chicago or Duluth or St. Paul? Ellis Island was not yet open so they likely had to go through Castle Garden but I can't find my Bergstroms anywhere, in spite of trying all the different spellings they used for their name the first years. Any hints would be appreciated. Incidentally I ran across a great book that would be of interest to anyone on this Benton Co. Minn list. It is on Heritage Quest that can be accessed online through your library card. It is "History of Sterns Co. Minnesota" by Wm Bill Mitchell. It has some great articles on the early days of the area.

I'm still working on exactly where my Gilmanton family came from. I do have one naturalization record that states one of the children was born in Gross Zirkwitz. The family was Martin and Catherine Schmidt, but they went by Smith after immigrating. They came to Gilmanton area in 1881 and 1883. I did find that Martin traveled with a group which stated they were going to the Salk Rapids, MN area on the ship manifest. I did find that several of those were also in Gilmanton. Those I found traveling with him to America were last names of Gurka or Gurkie and Warmka. Likely there were others. Catherine Schmidt traveled with the children to America in 1883 and there were likely others traveling with her that moved to the same area. Thanks!!
