I would like to help out the historical society by taking digital pictures. These are the areas I had in mind if no one else has already spoken for: Blue schools at county road 5 and 66 and 5 & 7, Ronneby church, Gilman post office, Ballpark Pizza, town hall, liquer store, bank,Benboom farm, church former school, and the GA Church in Foley I thought I would make up cards identifying myself and asking permission to photofgaph private residences. On the card i plan on putting my name, volunteer photographer, Benton County Historical Society and the phone #. Please let me know if this plan is ok. Jan Rothanburg

Martin and Catherine or Katie Schmidt/Smith immigrated about 1881 and settled in the Gilmanton area. They came from the Gross Zirkwitz area of West Prussia. They went by the name Smith until about 1910 when the parents seemed to use Schmidt again. They immigrated with 5 children (one other child apparently died in West Prussia) and had 10 more in Minnesota. They were definitely Catholic. Also, Martin's Father George Schmidt/Smith who I believe went by Smith also was in Gilmanton and died there in 1897. I saw another name of August Schmidt/Smith who may have also been related. There was also a Joseph and Marie (Mary) Warmka or Warmke family that immigrated at the same time as Martin. On census records some children with them show as Behnke, Banke, or Benke. Catherine Schmidt/Smith's maiden name was Behnke, and I know her mother's name was Marie or Mary, so seems Marie Warmke could be her Mother? I found Mary Warmke is buried at St Peter and Paul Church cemetery and died February 3, 1888. Would be great to know about these and those with similar names in the Gilman area from your book. You can contact me by email at tomwdcraftr at juno.com if you'd like. Thanks so much!! Tom McMillan (Washougal, WA) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My great-great grandfather was Milety Dutkevich, born approximately 1840-1850 in Russia or Poland. Poland was part of Russia at that point. I found my Great Grandfather Martin Schmidt arrived from West Prussia June 28, 1881. His destination was shown as Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, and I know he ended up in the Gilmanton, Minnesota area where the family farmed for many years. Martin's wife and children traveled to America in 1883. There were some traveling with him to the same area shown as: Josef Warmke and Marie Warmke a married couple. Shown under them were apparently children: Rosalie, Albertine, Paul, and Agnes all shown as Warmke. The 1885 census for Gilmanton, Benton County, MN shows a household of: Joseph Warmka 64 and Mary Warmka 55. Below them listed in the same household are: Frank Benka 26, Andrew Benka 23, Paul Benka 17 and Agnes Benka 6. Behnke is probably the correct spelling and I've seen it as Banke. On later census and other records I found Frank as Behnke and Agnes as Behnke (also another spelling I've seen is Banke). It seems Andrew and Paul went by Warmke or Warmka on later records. I do have an obituary for this Frank Banke who died in Sauk Rapids late in December of 1933. It showed he had also lived near Foley, MN which is close to Gilmanton. OK, the wife (my Great Grandmother) of Martin Schmidt was maiden name Catherine Behnke (aka: Catharina, Kate, Katie, Katherine and such). Her Mother's maiden name was Marie or Mary Liesser or Von Liser of similar. Catherine's Father's name was Frank Behnke. Sooo, I'm wondering about Marie Warmka or Warmke?? Could she have first been married to a Franke Behnke before she immigrated??? I'm thinking the Frank Benka (Banke on obituary) shown on the 1885 census record at the same residence might have been her Son from a first marriage??? Mary Warmke was born January 5, 1830 and died February 3, 1888 and is in the cemetary of St Peter and Paul Church in Gilmanton. I'm hoping someone might know more about this family. Would appreciate any information that might help me in determining if she could be Catherine's Mother!! Catherine was born in 1852, so Mary Warmke's age would fit to have been her Mother. Thanks so much, Tom McMillan (Washougal, WA) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
