The Minnesota Historical Society has been microfilming the Minnesota Department of Health death records for the entire state. The plan is to go through 1955. From 1900 through 1907, counties submitted 3X5 cards with death data. The cards for each county were kept by year (so they'd be able to compare # of deaths each year) in alphabetical order. Beginning in 1908, duplicate certificates of death that were filed in the counties were required to be sent to the Department of Health. They were numbered and filed in order issued, also by year for each county. This made it possible for the State to tell if all duplicates were in fact filed, and for them to still compare the number of deaths by county by year. MHS is currently in the 1940s, heading for 1955. In both sets of records, the cities of Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Duluth are separate from their respective counties. Death certificates are still filed by place of death, and not by place of last residence. Someone who always lived in Benton County that died in a Stearns County hospital will be recorded in Stearns County. The significance of this to MN researchers is that if you know which county(ies) your ancestor died in, you can now do your own records search. The microfilms are available through your public library and MHS on interlibrary loan. Ask your reference librarian what you need to do to have them sent to the library. So for those who like to do their own record searching, and the time frame of 1900-194?/1955 is appropriate, you have another option. Earlier than 1900, you will still need to go to the county for the certs. Minnesota vital records are kept in the county courthouses. Birth and death records usually begin in 1870. Only a small percentage of the births and deaths were recorded in these early years. The Minnesota Department of Health has duplicate copies of birth records since 1900 and deaths since 1908. Marriage records are generally recorded from the formation date of the county and remain housed at the county level. All copies, whether certified or uncertified, cost $11.00 for death and marriage certificates. Birth certificates cost $14.00. Minnesota law provides for an hourly charge to search for records when the date of the event is not known. Minnesota Department of Health, Department of Vital Statistics, 717 Delaware St., SE, P.O. Dear Members: My apologies to those that may be offended by the 3/6/01 e-mail of Richard A. Frazier, a student at the University of Wisconsin-Stout asking your participation in a genealogical research survey. This survey was mailed out without my permission. I do not support requests that may be used for commercial gain and I am sure that you appreciate not being SPAMMED by mass mailings. Your participation in the survey is by your choice, however, I am disturbed by intrusive questions as those that ask about your personal income. I have removed and banned this student from further participation in the list. It appears that he SPAMMED the entire state of Minnesota. Should you have further questions, you may e-mail me privately at rzurek@aol.com. Ron Zurek RootsWeb.com/MNBENTON and MNMILLEL-L List Administrator

Hello list! I am new to this list. I am looking for information on John J. Cameron b.5/1/1845 in Canada married to Permelia (Millie) Lyons in 8/1869 in Greenbush twp. in Mille Lacs. I have just received a copy of Millie Cameron's death cert. and she was removed for burial to Duelm, MN. This is new news to me. I did not have my family here before (Although they moved around a lot so I'm not surprised). Is there someone who can check the 1860 census in Benton for John J. Cameron or "other" Cameron's? Is there someone who would have access to Parish records for St. Lawrence Catholic Church? I know they are still an active Church. Do they maintain early 19th Century records themselves? I would appreciate any help someone may be able to provide. I look forward to some good threads on this list. All the best, Dean Cameron

Posted on: Benton County, Minnesota - Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Mn/Benton/28 Surname: Dillon, Bergstrom ------------------------- Looking for my Grandfather, who was in Sauk Rapids, Benton Co. Minnesota in 1910. According to the 1910 census, his name was RAYMOND DILLON, age 29, white, single, born in Kentucky. He was a Quarry Worker who boarded with a farm family headed by his forman at the Granite Works -- William Victor, his wife Ona, and children: Arthur, Myrtle, Walter, Herman, Raymond and Roy. Other boarders were listed as: John Keveny, Sidny Gladden, Robert Mantieth, Robert Shaw, Charles Heikakata(?), Francis Tositon(?), Charles Nelson. My grandmother lived down the road (now called Quarry Road) outside of Sauk Rapids. She was 19 years old and lived with her widowed mother and brothers. Her father's name was Martin Bergstrom. Grandma said that she was 'fooled' by sd Dillon and that when she told him she was pregnant that he fled -- never to be heard from again. All my mother has of him is a picture -- a good looking brown eyed man. It all happened a long time ago but I'd sure like to know anything about this man -- does any of these names mean anything to anyone? Thanks for any clues -- Carol

Hi all, Wonder if anyone can help me. My gr gr grandmother is buried in Old Benton Co. Cemetery. She died in 1916. In visiting the Benton Co. website, I see there are 2 Benton County cemeteries. I was told that the one she is buried at is the old Sauk Rapids Cemetery. Can someone tell me which Benton County Cemetery this might be? She died in 1916. I have someone who might be able to get a pic of her gravestone, but I wouldn't want to send her to the wrong cemetery. Thanks.
