Ron, and others: I am interested in this thread on Benton County churches and burials, for two reasons: The personal: My family [Harvey Stillman Norton] lived in Benton from close of the Civil War to about 1885, St. George Twp. Harvey was from NY, of English descent [a Yankee]. His wife, Sallie Finical, was of German and Scots-Irish descent, and had come to MN from Indiana where she was born. These folks lived in Hassan, Hennepin County, prior to moving to Benton County. When their daughter died at age 8 of diptheria, about 1876, they buried her back in Hassan next to her grandfather, in Hennepin County MN, even though they were living in Benton County, AND it appears that the remaining relatives had all left Hennepin County by that time. I have often wondered if there were no formal burial grounds for them to use in Benton?? Or, they were simply visiting when the death occurred. This family would have been of some Protestant faith. The professional: I chair a project of the Minnesota Genealogical Society to inventory all MN cemeteries, and available burial transcriptions. A volunteer has just started on Benton County. IF any of you have information that might help this effort, PLEASE get in touch! When the county info is complete, I will post the results here. Best wishes to all, Darlene Cruikshank Joyce, CGRS findmyfamilyplease.com _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. The present Congregational church at Sauk Rapids is the direct descendant of "Father" Hall's church. The Congregation is almost 150 years old. Many services were held in private homes at that time. I might be able to get you some additional information if you can identify a specific congregation. For example, the first Protestant religious services in Benton County were held in Sauk Rapids in 1853 when the Reverend Sherman Hall visited the village in the early part of that year and was invited to administer religious instructions. In February 1855, the Congregational church was established with seven charter families. For two years services were held in the homes of the different members, and on the second floor of the Stephen C. Crawford cabinet shop until in 1857 a building site was purchased from Jeremiah Russell, and a church built at a cost of $200...material being rafted down river from Gulf Lake mills for the purpose. Mr. Hall served as pastor of his church until his accidental death in August 1879. Ron Zurek Benton County Coordinator MNGenWeb/USGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~mnbenton

Hello veterans and newbies of the rootsweb. There are some really great folks who are willing to help just for the asking. I, myself do Volunteer research at Andersonville Civil War Prison in Andersonville Georgia. There are Any research I do is absolutely at NO cost and I am willing to do what I can. There are 259 prisoners on record from the state of Minnesota and more than 100 who died here, I thought I would send my offer. I feel the need to say I am not in anyway trying to focus on the horrors of Andersonville compared to any POW camp in the north ..( i.e.Elmira ) or any others and do not wish to stir up arguments on this site. My focus is dedicated to ALL of those held prisoner during this war , on both sides as well as all Americans who gave their freedoms for those that we enjoy today.. I just happen to be near Andersonville so this is where I do my work Here are my sources of research. There are 2 online databases to do lookups.....One by name...one by Company and Regiment. I also have a copy of the Dorence Atwater Death list which has the names and grave numbers of 12960 graves with only 460 marked as " UNKNOWN " This along with a CD I have which contains 34,000 names of the 45,000 who were imprisoned there which helps me find prisoner records because of misspellings of the names or alternate names. I visit the prison site every couple of weeks and have access to the onsite databases as well as the physical files. I would like to let you know of another service I offer which is to take photos of graves for a small fee. Please do not consider this spam as my research offer is FREE for the asking and will be posted on this county site only once. If there is anything I can do in helping your research at Andersonville, please just ask. I have a Clara Balder b. 7/6/1900 d. 1/17/1959 m. Frank Winkelman in my family tree, and a photo and caption of a Theresa Balder who married Joseph Kampa and settled in St. George Township. They are on page 39 of my new book, "Sauk Rapids and Benton County" by Ronald Christopher Zurek ISBN 073851960X. Book is available online with the publisher arcadiapublishing.com, or through amazon.com and Barnes and Noble Dot Com (www.bn.com). Also, the St. Cloud Public Library and Foley Public Library have reference copies. A good place to research family history is the Benton County Historical Society Museum located in Sauk Rapids. Please see my reference page at www.rootsweb.com/~mnbenton/webdoc6.htm for further details on the historical society and what is in their collection. Good luck in your research. Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone had any information on my great great great grandfather, Martin Herbst. b. 1 Nov 1844 in Baden, Germany d. 7 dec 1913. He married Caroline Ann Balder. Here is the only information I have concerning him Married in the old log Catholic Church in Duelm, MN. They had seven children, namely: Joseph, Charles, Albert, Adolph, Clara, William and Alma. The Catholic Church in which they were married in was built by Lawrence Balzer. He was the oldest pioneer living in Benton Co., so the church was given the name `St. Lawrence`. His father died at an early age and his mother remarried. The step father didn't like Martin and made him sleep in the stable. Martin Herbst came to America with his maternal uncle 1853 at the age of nine years. Settled in Indiana where they farmed until 1865. Martin went north to St. Cloud, Mn. There he was employed by the freight company for almost five years. Because of the independence he had found in farming, it induced him to take a homestead in St. George Township in Benton Co. in 1869. Thank you
