It is encouraging to me just to get a reply to what has been such a genealogical brick wall! Interesting to see that your name is Jake. When my dad, John James Hurth was adopted his name was changed to Jacob John Pilles, but everyone called him Jake. Marie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There are many avenues of research, like through the Benton County Historical Society, and others. Our Grandparents lived and had children in Sauk Rapids during the year range you mention. Send the name in question, and his adopted name to the Benton County Historical Society. Also check the Minnesota Historical Society, and the Iron Range Research Center, both of which are located in MN. Also check with the the County Seat in Foley Minnesota for any records. Benton County also has plat maps available, too (these may require a volunteer to retreive them), but I may have some ideas for this, too. Good luck... 2. I looked up HURTH on Heritage and it seems to be interchanged with Kurth. In the 1880 census there was a family of them in Sterns Co. at Lake Henry. It consisted of Ernst 44; Wilemine 38; Charley 9;Elizabeth 11; Henry 19; Mona 2; Sichia 6; William 15. There was also a Hurth family in the same place in 1910: Emile age 25, parents born in Germany. St.Cloud orphanage has no record of a child by that name and I wonder if anyone knows if Sauk Rapids had an orphanage then, or if Nuns took in infants, ie the Poor Clare order. My Dad's birth name was John James Hurth and I do not know if his parents were married. He was baptized in Holy Angel's Catholic Church in St.Cloud 07/07/1895 and his sponsors were John Mischo and Barbara Vick (or Vich). Apparently upon adoption by a Stearns County couple, his birth name was deleted from the birth certificate and his adopted name placed.
