Review - March 29, 1916 BERNHARD KNEES Friends of Bernhard Knees were shocked to hear of his death last Wednesday at the Union hospital where he had been taken only the week before suffering from what was then though to be a slight kidney disorder. Up to a week previous to his death he head gone about his farm work, little thinking this disease was undermining his strong body. On being taken ill he was ordered to take the baths at the hospital by the attending physician with the hope that at least temporary relief would result but he failed rapidly and passed away at 2 o'clock Wednesday morning. Mr. Knees was born and raised in Milford and lived all his life in that township. He was born March 8, 1860, on the old Knees homestead and worked on his father's farm until his marriage, October 31, 1889, to Miss Kunigunde Backer, when the couple took up their residence on their own farm. Deceased is survived by his sorrowing widow and five children, Frieda, Oscar, Ella, Herta and Erna, all of whom still reside at home; also by the following brothers and sisters: Philip, Henry and Albert Knees, Mrs. Dan Mecklenburg, Mrs. Herman Albrecht, Mrs. Christ Backer and Mrs. Fred Friedrich. Mr. and Mrs. Knees two years ago celebrated their silver wedding anniversary. Mr. Knees was one of the progressive farmers of the county. He worked increasingly for the advancement of the rural communities, for the betterment of social and educational conditions on the farm and the closer co-operation of the residents of a township for the benefit of all. He took a leading position in the advocacy of good and better roads and gave willingly and unstintingly of his time and money for these purposes. Milford, through the death of Mr. Knees has lost one of its most influential and leading citizens. The funeral services were held last Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the late home of the deceased and interment was made at the Lutheran cemetery in this city. Rev. C.J. Albrecht officiated.
