It brings back so many memories of things my father, Harlan, had told me when I was younger. His sister is still alive. I'll give you more details about their whereabouts and doings in an email, if you wish, [email protected] I'll try to ring him a little later today to let him know. The pictures would be fantastic to see. We only have a very few left. I had heard about how Uncle Ira had lost his arm...it is a bit of an object lesson. Harlan and Helen's children grew up in the woods as it were. Some still live there. I even lived in a log cabin with a pump over the kitchen sink for a time in the Rockies. I was a bit surprised to hear that GGM Lucy rode a motorcycle. From Dad's recollection of her she seemed very proper, but kind. However, I had though ECP was a bit of a rebel. On the other hand, Verona and Otis would go motorcycle riding outside of Flint to do their courting (on an Indian I believe). They were introduced by Percy. I have a picture or two of the single-winged plane that they build and flew in Flint about 1930. The only one of the brothers that I really knew was Uncle Eugene (Speed). I inherited his Cushman Eagle scooter when he died and, thus began my motorcycle days which I lived to tell about, fortunately. I grew up with Dad rebuilding Harley's in the garage (my bedroom). I have an old map of Buckley that has a number of the Hayes and Peper properties listed (off the web). Ahhhh...the Indian connection. Verona's family was associated with the Brotherton Indian Tribe of New York and Wisconsin. I am not sure how all the family members were connected. But, at least the cousin of her grandfather was married to the great-granddaughter of Samson Occom who was an Anglican minister, in fact he is on their list of Saints (venerables) in America. On the Hayes side, I am still trying to sort this out. Many stories told to me growing up that are probably best told in an email. However, the long and short of it is that I long suspected that John was of either First Nation or Metis Canadian regardless of what the census data lists. Then, again, it may have been Lottie Jarvis who had an Indian heritage from up-state New York. Her mother's family is something of a mystery. Of course, if Lona Mai was from Tennessee as her marriage registration indicates, she may have some Chickasaw, Shawnee or Cherokee heritage herself. But, I am guessing a Hayes connection. We will be stopping in to see Dad's sister to see if she can shed some light. Doherty and Jarvis families are definitely related. I cannot remember off the top of my head which generation. Thanks for the information about the cemetery. Dad had told me some details a number of years ago and I had found the cemetery on line with a listing of various family members. I have got to run now. If you can get onto Ancestry.com, I have a Hayes Family Tree going that will have a great deal of information on it about the Bates and the Pepers. The Pepers were in up-state and western New York before they migrated westward. John Anthony Peper was the grandfather of Martin Leroy Peper (Leroy stays in the family as a name). JAP's wife Sophia was a Robbins and they go back in USA on various lines. Both the Pepers and the Robins have genealogical books published about the families. However, there is a very big mistake in the Peper related book that I have had to untangle and point out the the Peper family. It relates to our line. Cheers, Rick Hayes Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
