    1. Re: [MIWEXFOR] Hayes of Wexford Co. Buckley area
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: mrdurtal1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.michigan.counties.wexford/1680.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am a grandson of Otis Arthur Hayes who was born in Buckley, Michigan to Clarence MILTON Hayes and Lucy AMY Pepper (from the birth certificate of OAH and attested by other evidence--the W is a transcription error in the census which you can see clearly in the scanned image as an A like that of Otis A. and distinct from the W's elsewhere). Clarence was the son of John and Lottie (Jarvis) Hayes. Lottie's parents were James and Elizabeth June (Betsey Chase) Jarvis. We are still trying to find out more about John and his parents. He seems to have drifted down to Michigan from Ontario around 1880. John (d. 1928) and Lottie (d. 1943) are buried in Muskegon along with their son Harry James Hayes (d. 1965) and his wife Maria. Otis died a few years before Cecil (as my father remembers his uncle) or Clarence Cecil as you probably remember his name. Eva Hayes remains something of a mystery as yet. I have a great deal of material on the Peper family back to Holland and have been in touch with Peper cousins in USA (I live in Melbourne, Australia--long story). Not much on the Jarvises unfortunately. Betsey's parents were Jeremiah and Naoma (Edwards) Chase of Honeoye, New York. I have a bit about some of Betsey's siblings and a little about her father. Otis married Verona Bulman who died a couple of years ago at the age of 97. Clarence and Lucy divorced in 1942 and Lucy died a few years later (June 1946) shortly after her sister Edna Bradford (April 1946). Their brother Ira died sometime later (7 May 1953) at your grandfather's house after Otis died on 31 January 1953 of a heart attack in Missoula, Montana. I have some items from newspapers relating to deaths and some other events including information about Cecil and his family. For instance, there is a news clipping about Gloria Hayes, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence C. Hayes, marrying Robert Smith in September of 1949. Lucy's mother was Emmaretta C. Bates and we can trace this family back to Lydd, Kent, England to about 1490. They were attested to having been in this area for about three hundred years at this point and many Bates graves can be in and round the local church--they have even made it into some scholar research into local political practices. Many of the various lines relating to the American Bates were members of the Plymouth Colony or were Puritans settling in Mass. circa 1630. Emmaretta's father was Ira W. Bates and her mother was Isabel A. Scott. We can trace the Scott family a little way back, but not too far (as yet). Many Bates in the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. Ira W. Bates' son, Albert, was in the Civil War. My family and I will be heading off to Europe in a few days spending some time visiting friends and, then, we will be heading to the USA and plan to drive from east to the west coast visiting family sites along the way. We hope to stop in at Buckley and Muskegon to see the cemeteries where so many of our folks are buried. We have been wishing to do so for many years. We seem to be in the same generation...I think that would make us second cousins by my estimate. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
