Thank you for responding. This is so exciting to me! Yes, we are definitely related! It seems that you have much more information than we do. I just started this search, and I was doing a lot of guessing. My dad's dad (Clarence C.) died when my dad was about 11-12, so he doesn't remember much. For some reason, he thought the M in his grandfathers name stood for Maurice. And yes, Eva is a mystery. Dad didn't even know about her. Dad did say that he remembers others calling his dad, Clarence, "Cecil"..and that his Uncle Ira was pronounced "Iree" with a long "e", but he only remembers meeting him once. Lucy was somewhat of a rebel for those times, driving motorcylces:) Dad's mother (my grandmother, Lona Mai Hopkins)often told him that the Hayes' drove in a covered wagon from Hillsdale to Buckley (or Wexford County), but he never knew if that meant Hillsdale, MI or Hillsdale, NY. From my research, I can see it was MI. Gloria Hayes is my dad's sister. She has four kids: Robert, Tina, Dennis, and Vicki (who still lives in Buckly). There was also another sister, Joyce who married a Jerry Carlson, and they always lived in Flint, Mi (where I was born). Aunt Joyce has other kids from her first husband (who was from Lebannon) who still live in Flint. Gloria, Joyce, and my dad (Dale) also had a brother, Wayne Hayes, who died in Florida in a motorcycle accident in the early '80s or late '70s. He was quite a character (involved in the White Panthers - I think he helped blow up a few post offices in Lansing, lol). I would love to have information about the Pepper family and these cousins. I did see the connection to Holland, but was stuck there. Dad always remembers that the Peppers were somehow connected to a tribe of Native Americans. Do you know what that info refers to? I have several pictures of Lucy and others. Most are still in negatives. Also, I would like to tell you where that farm is in Buckley that the Peppers built and where Ira died. (btw, Uncle Ira raised bees there). The old foundation and cellar are still there. That house burned down from lightning hitting a tree when I was a little girl. I have no memory of that house: wish I did! That still bothers dad, as he has so many memories of that old farm house. Uncle Ira blew his arm off with a gun on that farm. He was going over a barbed wire fence when his gun got hooked and he shot his arm off. He had to walk the approx. 5-7 miles into town for help in that condition!! My dad still pays taxes on that property every year: he can't bear to let it go, even though we live in Louisiana now. Ira used to own the farmland across the road from that farm, but he sold it. There are also a lot of other sites where ppl in the family homesteaded around Buckley - around present da! y Lake Gitchigumee area and other areas. Most of the property was lost in the '30s for failure to pay taxes. The info about the Bates' is very interesting - I am a history buff, and I've always been especially intersted in Plymouth Colony! There is a website where you can post pictures of Michigan gravestones, but no Hayes' or Peppers' are posted as of yet. It's too bad that me and my dad couldn't meet you in Buckley (I'm so homesick for it) and show you around all those places. We've been wanting to take a trip like that for along time. Thank you again for giving me so much information. Good luck on your trip! Please keep me posted about all the exciting things you find out. Also, please feel free to ask me for information, too! I think that you may find out some things at the Cornell Cemetery in Buckley. It's on 4 County Line Road.
