It was just picked because a man named Schoolcraft wanted to name the counties in Michigan and he liked that name. I don't believe that George Manton came back to Michigan again after he moved away except to visit. I would look in Pennsylvania or New York for his burial place. Hope you find something. Do you think there would be any documentation or historical reference on which county in Ireland George Manton immigrated from? Do I consider that he came from Wexford Co. in Ireland? I wonder if George was buried in Erie, Pa. or brought back to Manton Twp.? Irish monuments are wonderful in general because many times a family will do the traditional thing and post on the stone the name of the deceased, birthplace, wife's maiden name, children and so forth. Since the name is so uncommon the location of Mantons Ireland are relocated to just a few areas, so I am hoping to pinpoint that location for George. If you come across the county where he is from I would enjoy hearing from you. Again, your message was very informative and thank you for all your time in presenting it to me. Author: sandraspencer52 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.michigan.counties.wexford/1591.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I found my copy of the book "Manton Then and Now" which was made up by the Manton Area Historical Museum in the 1970's. The references to George Manton are not very illuminating. He was one of three men who homesteaded in the area around 1872. They bought some land where the railroad was going to be and started a settlement. Local people called it Cedar Creek but the railroad people called it Manton Station. George Manton was the first postmaster appointed here on January 3, 1873. He erected a building and had a shoe sales and repair shop. He was also a supervisor for the township and involved in the controversy of the relocation of the courthouse in Wexford County. This relocation took place in 1881 after several years of fighting among the townships. George Manton is not mentioned after 1875 in the history of the town until 1896 when "George Manton, with his wife and daughter, arrived August sixth to visit Ezra Harger. The two founders of Manton gave an enlightening interv! iew to the Manton Tribune. Mr Manton was currently residing in Erie County, Pennsylvania." Some of the Manton Tribune is on microfilm at the Cadillac library. There is much that is missing and I don't know if this issue is there or not. I don't think any of George Manton's relatives still live in the area of Manton, Michigan. This is about all I can find about George Manton.
