It brings back so many memories of things my father, Harlan, had told me when I was younger. His sister is still alive. I'll give you more details about their whereabouts and doings in an email, if you wish, [email protected] I'll try to ring him a little later today to let him know. The pictures would be fantastic to see. We only have a very few left. I had heard about how Uncle Ira had lost his arm...it is a bit of an object lesson. Harlan and Helen's children grew up in the woods as it were. Some still live there. I even lived in a log cabin with a pump over the kitchen sink for a time in the Rockies. I was a bit surprised to hear that GGM Lucy rode a motorcycle. From Dad's recollection of her she seemed very proper, but kind. However, I had though ECP was a bit of a rebel. On the other hand, Verona and Otis would go motorcycle riding outside of Flint to do their courting (on an Indian I believe). They were introduced by Percy. I have a picture or two of the single-winged plane that they build and flew in Flint about 1930. The only one of the brothers that I really knew was Uncle Eugene (Speed). I inherited his Cushman Eagle scooter when he died and, thus began my motorcycle days which I lived to tell about, fortunately. I grew up with Dad rebuilding Harley's in the garage (my bedroom). I have an old map of Buckley that has a number of the Hayes and Peper properties listed (off the web). Ahhhh...the Indian connection. Verona's family was associated with the Brotherton Indian Tribe of New York and Wisconsin. I am not sure how all the family members were connected. But, at least the cousin of her grandfather was married to the great-granddaughter of Samson Occom who was an Anglican minister, in fact he is on their list of Saints (venerables) in America. On the Hayes side, I am still trying to sort this out. Many stories told to me growing up that are probably best told in an email. However, the long and short of it is that I long suspected that John was of either First Nation or Metis Canadian regardless of what the census data lists. Then, again, it may have been Lottie Jarvis who had an Indian heritage from up-state New York. Her mother's family is something of a mystery. Of course, if Lona Mai was from Tennessee as her marriage registration indicates, she may have some Chickasaw, Shawnee or Cherokee heritage herself. But, I am guessing a Hayes connection. We will be stopping in to see Dad's sister to see if she can shed some light. Doherty and Jarvis families are definitely related. I cannot remember off the top of my head which generation. Thanks for the information about the cemetery. Dad had told me some details a number of years ago and I had found the cemetery on line with a listing of various family members. I have got to run now. If you can get onto Ancestry.com, I have a Hayes Family Tree going that will have a great deal of information on it about the Bates and the Pepers. The Pepers were in up-state and western New York before they migrated westward. John Anthony Peper was the grandfather of Martin Leroy Peper (Leroy stays in the family as a name). JAP's wife Sophia was a Robbins and they go back in USA on various lines. Both the Pepers and the Robins have genealogical books published about the families. However, there is a very big mistake in the Peper related book that I have had to untangle and point out the the Peper family. It relates to our line. Sometimes it isn't only about where we come from and who we descend from, but the little stories that make it so interesting. Gloria Hayes Smith (C. Cecil's daughter) and Lona Mai Hayes (Clarene Cecil's wife) used to visit a family who still live in Buckley with the name Doherty. The ancestors of these Doherty's bought Clarence Cecil's 10 acre farm (the one I was telling you about earlier by Lake Gitchegumee in Buckley) and they also paid for the gravestones for Ira Pepper and Clarence M. Dad says they were cousins somehow of his dad (Cecil) and he thinks he remembers the name Jarvis in connection with them somehow. Maybe this is a lead for the Jarvis side??? This old farm is on N 17 road and was called "Maple Grove." There is still a depression of where the house used to be. These gravestones are in Cornell Cemetery in Buckley, Mi on 4 County Line Road. There is a "Pepper row". There is one name in that row that doesn't belong, and dad said the sexton at the time he was there (Kellogg) said he would have it moved, but last he checked, it wasn't. So hopefully, this name won't confuse you. Martin and Emmarretta (Emma) are buried there, too, with Clarence M., Lucy, and Ira. Speaking of Emma, dad said his sister said that SHE was the one with a motorcylce, not Lucy - which seems to make her even more of a rebel than had it been Lucy, as she came a while before Lucy! I don't ride motorcyles, but still think this is interesting. He also said that Lucy was known as kind of a "tramp." Lol. Pine Pitch Pete (!!!) used to stay with her...that's how she got that reputation and maybe her divorce, too, lol. My Grandma Lona (Lucy's daughter-in-law) said Lucy was a really mean lady:) We have pictures of Lucy, both Clarence's, your grandfather Otis (who was a handsome man), and Emma. Do you have pictures? Also, dad remembers visiting a family named Percy and Eloise Bulman in Flint when he was little. His dad, Cecil, used to bring the family there to visit. Are these relatives of yours through Verona? Who, btw, dad was surprised and happy to hear lived so long. About Ira, his formal residence at the time of death was the Buckley farm, but he actually died in Flint at Gloria and Robert's (Bob)house. He was so sick and huge - dad thinks he had heart failure. He had such huge feet and legs that he couldn't wear shoes: he had to wear golashas. He died sitting on the toilet and fell against the door, blocking it. They had to climb over the roof of the house and break the bathroom window to get him out. Dismal end, right? Especially after he already didn't have an arm, poor man! Also, dad said they used to visit some other cousins of Cecil's named Roy (blind) and Goldie (legally blind). These may also be of some help if they are found to be part of the Jarvis'. Cecil is buried in Memorial Park in Flint, MI. Joyce Hayes Carlson is buried there, too. Well, this is a lot of info to give you, and I don't even know your name! I think that Harlan must be your dad (is he still living?), and Hellen, your aunt. This would make you my dad's second cousin and my third, because Otis was my dad's uncle. Also, about the American Indian connection I mentioned earlier: Clarence Cecil and Lona Mai's daughter, Gloria, is listed as American Indian on her birth certificate, but caucasion on her death certificate. We are still in touch with Robert Smith, Jr. (Gloria's son) and my dad saw this birth certificate of his sisters. This is def. a mystery, right? Well, I hope you get this info before you travel to Wexford, Co!! Much luck, Kimberly Hayes Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Thank you for responding. This is so exciting to me! Yes, we are definitely related! It seems that you have much more information than we do. I just started this search, and I was doing a lot of guessing. My dad's dad (Clarence C.) died when my dad was about 11-12, so he doesn't remember much. For some reason, he thought the M in his grandfathers name stood for Maurice. And yes, Eva is a mystery. Dad didn't even know about her. Dad did say that he remembers others calling his dad, Clarence, "Cecil"..and that his Uncle Ira was pronounced "Iree" with a long "e", but he only remembers meeting him once. Lucy was somewhat of a rebel for those times, driving motorcylces:) Dad's mother (my grandmother, Lona Mai Hopkins)often told him that the Hayes' drove in a covered wagon from Hillsdale to Buckley (or Wexford County), but he never knew if that meant Hillsdale, MI or Hillsdale, NY. From my research, I can see it was MI. Gloria Hayes is my dad's sister. She has four kids: Robert, Tina, Dennis, and Vicki (who still lives in Buckly). There was also another sister, Joyce who married a Jerry Carlson, and they always lived in Flint, Mi (where I was born). Aunt Joyce has other kids from her first husband (who was from Lebannon) who still live in Flint. Gloria, Joyce, and my dad (Dale) also had a brother, Wayne Hayes, who died in Florida in a motorcycle accident in the early '80s or late '70s. He was quite a character (involved in the White Panthers - I think he helped blow up a few post offices in Lansing, lol). I would love to have information about the Pepper family and these cousins. I did see the connection to Holland, but was stuck there. Dad always remembers that the Peppers were somehow connected to a tribe of Native Americans. Do you know what that info refers to? I have several pictures of Lucy and others. Most are still in negatives. Also, I would like to tell you where that farm is in Buckley that the Peppers built and where Ira died. (btw, Uncle Ira raised bees there). The old foundation and cellar are still there. That house burned down from lightning hitting a tree when I was a little girl. I have no memory of that house: wish I did! That still bothers dad, as he has so many memories of that old farm house. Uncle Ira blew his arm off with a gun on that farm. He was going over a barbed wire fence when his gun got hooked and he shot his arm off. He had to walk the approx. 5-7 miles into town for help in that condition!! My dad still pays taxes on that property every year: he can't bear to let it go, even though we live in Louisiana now. Ira used to own the farmland across the road from that farm, but he sold it. There are also a lot of other sites where ppl in the family homesteaded around Buckley - around present da! y Lake Gitchigumee area and other areas. Most of the property was lost in the '30s for failure to pay taxes. The info about the Bates' is very interesting - I am a history buff, and I've always been especially intersted in Plymouth Colony! There is a website where you can post pictures of Michigan gravestones, but no Hayes' or Peppers' are posted as of yet. It's too bad that me and my dad couldn't meet you in Buckley (I'm so homesick for it) and show you around all those places. We've been wanting to take a trip like that for along time. Thank you again for giving me so much information. Good luck on your trip! Please keep me posted about all the exciting things you find out. Also, please feel free to ask me for information, too! I think that you may find out some things at the Cornell Cemetery in Buckley. It's on 4 County Line Road. Clarence was the son of John and Lottie (Jarvis) Hayes. Lottie's parents were James and Elizabeth June (Betsey Chase) Jarvis. We are still trying to find out more about John and his parents. He seems to have drifted down to Michigan from Ontario around 1880. John (d. 1928) and Lottie (d. 1943) are buried in Muskegon along with their son Harry James Hayes (d. 1965) and his wife Maria. Otis died a few years before Cecil (as my father remembers his uncle) or Clarence Cecil as you probably remember his name. Eva Hayes remains something of a mystery as yet. I have a great deal of material on the Peper family back to Holland and have been in touch with Peper cousins in USA (I live in Melbourne, Australia--long story). Not much on the Jarvises unfortunately. Betsey's parents were Jeremiah and Naoma (Edwards) Chase of Honeoye, New York. I have a bit about some of Betsey's siblings and a little about her father. Otis married Verona Bulman who died a couple of years ago at the age of 97. Clarence and Lucy divorced in 1942 and Lucy died a few years later (June 1946) shortly after her sister Edna Bradford (April 1946). Their brother Ira died sometime later (7 May 1953) at your grandfather's house after Otis died on 31 January 1953 of a heart attack in Missoula, Montana. I have some items from newspapers relating to deaths and some other events including information about Cecil and his family. For instance, there is a news clipping about Gloria Hayes, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence C. Hayes, marrying Robert Smith in September of 1949. Lucy's mother was Emmaretta C. Bates and we can trace this family back to Lydd, Kent, England to about 1490. They were attested to having been in this area for about three hundred years at this point and many Bates graves can be in and round the local church--they have even made it into some scholar research into local political practices. Many of the various lines relating to the American Bates were members of the Plymouth Colony or were Puritans settling in Mass. circa 1630. Emmaretta's father was Ira W. Bates and her mother was Isabel A. Scott. We can trace the Scott family a little way back, but not too far (as yet). Many Bates in the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. Ira W. Bates' son, Albert, was in the Civil War. My family and I will be heading off to Europe in a few days spending some time visiting friends and, then, we will be heading to the USA and plan to drive from east to the west coast visiting family sites along the way. We hope to stop in at Buckley and Muskegon to see the cemeteries where so many of our folks are buried. We have been wishing to do so for many years. We seem to be in the same generation...I think that would make us second cousins by my estimate. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Chauncery court is more than divorce records - this court dealt with family & equity matters. I found my 2nd great grandfather being foreclosed on in these books. These books were at the court house in their vault. It would be nice for someone to volunteer to go through and transcribe and index them as I quickly ran out of time and had to quit before I found what I was looking for.
