As mentioned on this list several times is the suggestion of contacting the Ford Centennial Library in Dearborn which has the News from 1955 & the Free Press from 1970. It stated that the service is free with a SASE. The Mount Clemens Library (where I volunteer) also has a lookup service but there is a charge of $5 for Detroit papers & a SASE. They have the News from 1939 & the Free Press from 1955.
