Some places list the parents. Or if they married in a church, there may be a record of the parents' names. He may not have been born in Detroit but a suburb. Or where he was born was later annexed by Detroit. Detroit grew a lot between 1900 and 1920-both population wise and land. Since he died in 1936, he may not have registered for social security prior to his death but that could be another place to look. Think the cost is about $26 or $27. http://www.ssa.gov/foia/ You might want to try to see if there is a listing in a Detroit City Directory for that time period.
