Ask for a look-up. Once you have the date of death, you can do several things. The Detroit Public Library has the Detroit newspapers on microfilm. They are The Detroit News (which I think was the largest at that time), The Detroit Free Press and The Detroit Times. If you live in the area, go to the library; if not, you can order the death notice for $15.00. The Henry Ford Centennial Library in Dearborn has the Detroit News for that time period-they will do copies for free. If you live in the State of Michigan, ask your reference librarian to order the microfilms of the newspapers from the Library of Michigan (while it is still around-governor is trying to get rid of the library and the State Archives). http://www.detroit.lib.mi.us/burton/burton_index.htm http://www.detroit.lib.mi.us/ill/lending.htm http://www.detroit.lib.mi.us/gi/InternetObit.Ltr.pdf http://www.michigan.gov/hal/0,1607,7-160-17449_18643_29527---,00.html DEARBORN: Henry Ford Centennial Library (313) 943-2330, 16301 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn, Mi 48126. Has the Detroit News from 1955 and the Detroit Free Press from 1970. To request a look-up and copy of a death notice/obituary, send SASE to above address Attention: Adult Services. They will not respond without the self-addressed stamped envelope. You must know the date of death or burial. There is no charge for this service as of December 2008. If she died outside of Detroit, the only thing I can suggest at this time is that you get her death record which can be costly-$26 or $27 at the state level, less at the county level or city but the City of Detroit only has city deaths and the County only has those deaths that occurred in Wayne County but not in the city of Detroit. Any idea of where she might be buried? Or one of her family members might be buried? If so, contact the cemetery to see if she is there and if they have the date of death but you can generally use the date of burial as a beginning.
