She was born to Gerrit and Clara Oppenhuizen on August 25, 1937 in Grand Rapids. She spent her formative years in Kalamazoo, graduating from Kalamazoo Central in 1955 and Western Michigan University in 1959 majoring in Spanish. She taught Spanish in Fremont, Michigan. In 1963 she married her husband Darrel and retired from teaching to raise four children Susan, Peter, Ruth and Matthew. In the late eighties she returned to teaching Spanish, first in Utica at Henry Ford II High School and later at Muskegon Community College, where she became chair of the Foreign Language Department. She is a member of MENSA and the author of the book Agustin Yanez Interpreter of the Modern Mexican Novel. She is survived by her sister Margaret Turpin and her brother Derck Oppenhuizen, her husband, children, grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephew and cousins. Visitation Friday 3 - 9 PM at Vermeulen Funeral Home, 46401 W Ann Arbor Road (btwn Sheldon and Beck) Plymouth. In state Saturday 10 AM until 11 AM funeral service at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 10101 Ann Arbor Road (at Gotfredson) Plymouth. Interment United Memorial Gardens.
