French-Canadian Heritage Society of Michigan List _______________________________________________ Hello Folks, Sorry to keep pestering you about the Library of Michigan, but as you know, the future of this institution is still in danger. I am sure many of you are tired with this topic, but we are making progress and need to keep pressing forward. I am sure many of you saw that Governor Granholm has revised her executive order and is now using language that implies that the Library of Michigan and its collections will stay intact. In other words, she blinked, and she blinked because of the pressure we citizens have placed on her and our legislators. But now is not time to rest on our oars. This is the time to make another push. This is going to sound odd, but it is time to write Governor Granholm and thank her for modifying her executive order and recognizing that the Library of Michigan and its collections must remain intact. Politicians appreciate getting positive feedback more than criticism, so let her know this revision of her executive order is a step in the right direction and is appreciated. However, we have to remind her that the Library of Michigan should remain located in the Michigan Historical Center adjacent to the Archives of Michigan. Also, it is important that you understand that the Michigan Center for Innovation and Reinvention Board, an advisory body within the Department of Natural Resources, will play a significant role in determining the future of the Library of Michigan, its location, and its collections. The governor modified her executive order to read “Qualified individuals recommended for consideration for appointment to the Board should include librarians, historians, archivists, and others with relevant expertise.” We must write to the governor and make sure she understands that this Board MUST have not only librarians, historians, and archivists, but it should also have genealogists on it. So please keep up the good work. Write to Governor Granholm and keep the pressure on your state senator and representative to continue protecting the Library of Michigan. JP John P.
