She was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on April 5, 1948. She graduated from Michigan State University in 1970. She then worked as a social work supervisor for the State of Michigan in the Detroit office for many years. After retirement, she maintained her commitment to social justice and child welfare, volunteering and then working as a case manager for United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham. JoAnne is survived by her daughter, Virginia Langum; her brother, Richard Adams; her friend and former sister-in-law, Andrea Gay; her friend and former husband, David Langum; her friend, Frances Langum; her step-children, David, Jr., Audrey and Anna Langum; and her dear friends, Nancy Richards, Mary Dear and Theresa Burns. JoAnne was preceded in death by her son, John Langum; and her parents, Earl and Eileen Adams. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at Ridout's Southern Heritage! Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama. The funeral service will be at 11 AM on Thursday, August 6, 2009 at Christ United Methodist Church in Birmingham. Reverend Leisha Boulware will officiate. A private burial service will be later this week at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
