Hi, I just joined the list. My great grandfather William Walter Rowe lived in Detroit from 1892 to 1904. He may have been there earlier and later, but I can't find any records. He was married the Catherine/Katherine Davis and had at least five children (William James b 1893, John Patrick b 1895, Mary M. b Dec 1896, David King b 1899, and Agnes C. b 1903), all born in Detroit, with one probably dying there. I have all the birth dates for the children from other sources except for the one who died young. I looked into obtaining birth certificate, but have seen conflicting information. The county site says you have to be named on the certificate or the birth has to be over 100 years ago. When I went to order them, it didn't allow for the latter. Can anyone verify which is the case? I'd also like to be able to do a search. If the every two year birth pattern for William and Catherine was the case then there would have been a child in 1901. They appeared in the 1910 census in Los Angles with all but Mary. Is there any online source for death certificates for the county? I have a subscription to ancestry.com, but can't find anything there for 1890 to 1910. Thanks for any help, William (Curt) Rowe

With help from Marge, I was able to figure out the birth certificate issue. Anyone can order a birth certificate for someone born over 100 years ago, but has to be my mail using a form. The on-line request method is only for those named on the certificate. It costs $26 per record for a three year search.
