I grew up on the west side of Detroit and was baptized at Strathmore Methoodist when the church was located on Schoolcraft just a couple of blocks west of Grand River. By late 1951 when I became a Boy Scout, the church was in a new facility on Schoolcraft between Memorial and Abington. That was BSA Trop 261 which had been in existence for 25 years when I joined! I attended Dossin Elementary, Edison Elem. and Redford HS class of 1958 - just in case anybody is looking for me :-). I ordered the death certificate, and it says he committed suicide, at home. It also says he died from a bullet wound to the chest. Which seems like an awkward way to commit suicide to me, but I guess he managed. He had worked at Ford, but was unemployed at the time of his death. I wonder if that's why he did it? Lots of people had been laid off and lost hope, so there were a lot of suicides due to that. It was reported by a woman named Estella Laskey. I wonder if she ever told stories about it? I still want to know more. Like who she was; why he did it, etc. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello Elaine. I work in the Michigan Legislature, and was actually involved with the district reapportionment after the 2000 and 2010 Censuses, so this query caught my eye. Congressional districts are reapportioned (drawn) after this censuses. Therefore, the Congressional district you refer to were as they were from 1932-1940. I don't have a detailed map from that timeframe, but I did manage to find a map someone drew from other maps at http://imageshack.us/f/167/19321940stateandwaynemaql6.png/ If you zoom and and look closely, CD1 is the city of Hamtramck and the surrounding area of Detroit, from 8 Mile south to the river. I wish I had a better map for you, but at least now we know it's in the north east part of the city. Just for fun I did a quick search on Google Earth for 1942 Grant, Detroit. The exact address doesn't appear to exist, but it was located between Joseph Campau and Mitchell Streets, a block and half south of the Davison Freeway. This area falls into the area in the description above. 42°24'36.94"N, 83° 4'20.61"W is what Google Earth says was the address. It's one of those streets that was only one block long. You probably already know this, but George G. Sadowski has his own Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_G._Sadowski I hope this helps. It at least gave me a few minutes to "geek out" with the maps and such. :) On Jul 24, 2013, at 7:23 PM, Elaine Mahl O'Neill <elaineoneill1948@gmail.com> wrote: > I recently came into possession of a 1937 poster of FDR that was sent to a > family member who had apparently helped with or contributed to his campaign > in 1936. Thank you so much, Bill!! This helps me tremendously!! I'm familiar with the area, having lived a short time in Hamtramck in the late '60s. Just from the information you gave me, without even checking the map yet, I'm sure I know which relative this poster belonged to. I do know about George Sadowski's Wikipedia page. I spent considerable time there last night, along with the page for the current 1st Congressional District. Thank you again, so very much for your help. I appreciate it more than you know. I recently came into possession of a 1937 poster of FDR that was sent to a family member who had apparently helped with or contributed to his campaign in 1936. It was sent by George G. Sadowski (D. Michigan's 1st Congressional District). I'm not sure which family member this is because it's addressed by his first initial and last name. There are a few possibilities. I tried looking up the address to see where in the city it was located. The address no longer exists.(1942 Grant) So I tried to look up the area that made up the 1st Congressional district in that era. No luck. All I get is the current district which is now the Upper Peninsula and part of the Northern part of the Lower Peninsula. From what I was able to find, the districts were changed in 1992. Is there anywhere I can find information or a map showing where this district was prior to the 1992 redistricting? If I can determine where in the city this district was, I can possibly determine which relative this was sent to. Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way. I don't know. I just want to know where 1942 Grant was in 1937. Thank you for any suggestions. Elaine O. in the Beautiful Missouri Ozarks
