Our ancesters came to New France ( Quebec, Canada) in the mid 1650's when the French decided to claim this country. I have genealogy direct line right back to France. Maude's father was Thomas Ouellette a lumber baron from the Amherstburg, Ontario area. Thomas was the brother of my gr gr grandfather Jean Baptiste (Luke) Ouellette. Do you have a membership to ancestry by any chance. I would really like a picture of Maude if you don't mind. I have some pictures of Thomas. I was trying to research Thomas Ouellette's children and grandchildren. I know about Ida's family. The boys are hard to track and any girls who married without their married names. Thomas and his wife Elizabeth had a number of children, a number of them dying early in life. I'm not sure on some whether they died or lived adult lives. Any info you could provide would be great. The Ouellette family was a well off and well know bunch in Exxes County, Ontario since they moved to the! Windsor-Detroit area when the french government approached them to settle the Detroit River area. They recieved grants of land from the french government. The main street in Windsor is Ouellette Avenue. Thomas's parents and large family moved to Amherstburg, Ontario area in the mid to late 1840's. At that time it was thought the railway would be situated their rather than Windsor, therefore the main settlement. Of course it was later decided to have it go to Windsor and that is where the growth went. Amherstburg is still a small town. Look forward to hearing from you again. I changed my last name to Ouellette not knowing if there were any other Ouellettes out there (now I hyphenate it with my husband's last name). WOW! Reply when you can! Author: Georgia1910 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.michigan.counties.wayne/17848.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Burton Historical Collection of the main Detroit Public Library has an index to City of Detroit (only) deaths. Ask for a look-up. Once you have the date of death, you can do several things. The Detroit Public Library has the Detroit newspapers on microfilm. They are The Detroit News (which I think was the largest at that time), The Detroit Free Press and The Detroit Times. If you live in the area, go to the library; if not, you can order the death notice for $15.00. The Henry Ford Centennial Library in Dearborn has the Detroit News for that time period-they will do copies for free. If you live in the State of Michigan, ask your reference librarian to order the microfilms of the newspapers from the Library of Michigan (while it is still around-governor is trying to get rid of the library and the State Archives). http://www.detroit.lib.mi.us/burton/burton_index.htm http://www.detroit.lib.mi.us/ill/lending.htm http://www.detroit.lib.mi.us/gi/InternetObit.Ltr.pdf http://www.michigan.gov/hal/0,1607,7-160-17449_18643_29527---,00.html DEARBORN: Henry Ford Centennial Library (313) 943-2330, 16301 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn, Mi 48126. Has the Detroit News from 1955 and the Detroit Free Press from 1970. To request a look-up and copy of a death notice/obituary, send SASE to above address Attention: Adult Services. They will not respond without the self-addressed stamped envelope. You must know the date of death or burial. There is no charge for this service as of December 2008. If she died outside of Detroit, the only thing I can suggest at this time is that you get her death record which can be costly-$26 or $27 at the state level, less at the county level or city but the City of Detroit only has city deaths and the County only has those deaths that occurred in Wayne County but not in the city of Detroit. Any idea of where she might be buried? Or one of her family members might be buried? If so, contact the cemetery to see if she is there and if they have the date of death but you can generally use the date of burial as a beginning. 1. [MIWAYNE] MIGenWeb Supports Keeping the Library of MI Intact
    2. Jan Cortez
    3. MIGenWeb Supports Keeping The Library of Michigan Intact We, the members of the Michigan GenWeb project, wish to publicly state that we fully support the efforts of the Michigan Genealogical Council to keep the collections from the Library of Michigan from being separated or otherwise removed under Executive Order 2009-36, which disperses the archives amongst different departments and dissolves the Department of Histories, Arts and Libraries. We do acknowledge the financial crisis currently facing Michigan, however, we feel that the amount of money coming into the state from the number of tourists, visitors, genealogists, researchers and future entrepreneurs visiting the Library of Michigan is a revenue stream for the future of Michigan that the Governor should not shut down. In the words of Dr. William M. Anderson, on December 8, 2005, "I believe culture, broadly defined, is an untapped economic resource. When appropriately engaged, at local, regional, and statewide levels, our state's cultural resources can leverage significant new tax revenue, provide good paying jobs, and create sustainable enterprise. Additionally, Governor Jennifer Granholm stated on March 1, 2006, "We are going to base our economy more and more on our intellectual property, on the creative side, the value-added side of what we can offer. The power of creativity in propelling our economy is a fundamental building block of our state's transformation." The resources that the Library of Michigan holds are the stores of Michigan's intellectual property. Without them, researchers would have nowhere to find: - The largest collection of Michigan newspaper microfilm, which calls the Library of Michigan home. It covers all 83 counties of the state, over 1700 titles spanning more than 400 cities, townships, and villages. A collection of this scope cannot be found anywhere else. - The largest collection of Michigan city directories in the state. These directories document places of residence and occupations of Michiganders throughout the years. Patrons of the Library still use this collection for not only for studying genealogy, but also in planning for the future entrepreneurial enterprises and small businesses. - Ethnic Collections, like the Gorski collection, which focuses on Michigan's Polish Heritage, are not available elsewhere. - The Archives of Michigan holds over 300,000 historical photographs. Particularly important holdings deal with Michigan lumbering, Great Lakes shipping, Michigan mining, urban and rural life styles, and Michigan community scenes. - The collection also covers the entire Great Lakes Region, including New England, the Mid Atlantic, Quebec, and Ontario. Michigan is not in a vacuum. The Governor's Executive order would dissolve this part of the genealogy collection. Finally in the words of the Michigan Genealogical Council: "Innovation and Reinvention' can be done anywhere. Our state's cultural heritage center belongs together, in the Michigan Historical Center." You are right, Family is not listed in 1920 census. I think my grandmother might have gone to the Youngstown, OH aread first. Family is listed in 1930 census under Zemska. I have found most of the information on ancestry.com that is available. Now, I am looking for people who might be able to tell me that my grandmother was their great aunt. I found the passenger immigration log for my grandmother. It says that she was going to meet her brother Teofil. There are descendants from Teofil in Detroit. I am trying to determine if Teofil was really her brother. And what her mother's maiden name was. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Raymond married Almeda c.1921 and they had 2 children that I know of, Robert & Norina. Unfortunately I have no exact marriage details or birth details for the children. Raymond was born in Syracuse to Edward & Mary Duane. Edward died in a scaffolding accident on a building site in 1900. My great-grandmother was Edwards brother and I am trying to find any decendents of this Duane family. Would appreciate any further information or contact from any family members.
