    1. [MIWAYNE] Fwd: Michigan Library Association (MLA) Position
    2. Peggy Youngs
    3. *MLA Position Statement on Executive Order No. 2009-36 Abolishing the Department of History, Arts and Libraries* *Adopted by the MLA Board of Directors July 31, 2009* The Michigan Library Association (MLA) is opposed to Executive Order No. 2009-36 because it goes much further than abolishing the Department of History, Arts, and Libraries (HAL). MLA is not opposed to the elimination of HAL and the estimated savings of $2 million as MLA recognizes the difficult economic times facing Michigan. But the library community is opposed to the Executive Order because it diminishes the position, influence, and stature of the library community and the State Library of Michigan without recognizing the value of state library resources. It also fails to recognize the cost savings and effective delivery of statewide library services achieved through the leadership of the Library of Michigan and the collaboration, group purchasing, and resource sharing of the entire statewide library community. The Executive Order calls for breaking up the Library of Michigan without any real cost savings. It threatens to destroy a library system that works as a cohesive unit, dismantles library collections without a plan or any better alternative, and eliminates the position of State Librarian. It threatens free and open access to information and could decimate Michigan citizens’ access to unique and valuable resources. It fails to include any library representation on the proposed Michigan Center for Innovation and Reinvention Board whose first charge is to “maximize the benefits to the public of existing state library and historical resources including collections, buildings, and skilled personnel.” Ironically, what is truly at risk in this year’s budget cycle is statewide library services – the vision of the Library of Michigan – including the Michigan eLibrary (MeL) online information and subscription services and MeLCat the statewide interlibrary loan system. The Senate’s recently passed budget would cut library funding from $10 million to $7.5 million. This is less than half of what is statutorily required by law. A reduction of this magnitude threatens the maintenance of effort required to sustain the federal funding for these programs: the entire statewide resource sharing and interlibrary loan system could collapse. The Michigan Library Association supports efforts to maintain library services and keep their functions whole under the Library of Michigan within state government. And it supports maintaining state aid to libraries at $10 million in the 2009-10 budget.

Author: kbrownst Surnames: Chaffee Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.michigan.counties.wayne/17856.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Also note that I read that some of the graves originally located here had been moved to Riverside Cemetery. I have no idea which ones they were but the transcriptions may not be accurate for this among other reasons. Note that as I take and post pictures I will be adding names to the cemetery if they are not already there. If they are listed but no picture is forthcoming they may have been one of the "moved" graves and/or the stone may have become either unreadable or possibly destroyed by vandals; which is why the cemetery is kept locked. I hope at some time the Plymouth historical society may choose to restore this cemetery and replace some or all of the of the 'missing' or damaged stones. The stones are not in good condition with many broken and/or unreadable. I haven't finished yet and do plan to return to photograph what I can and many will need to be chalked in order to read them. I've had to "dig out" a few sunken stones in order to get to them. If you are looking for family in this area (Plymouth is SW of Detroit) Please take a moment and check out the cemetery at findagrave.com. You can search by cemetery name and/or relative name. 3. Get permission. Some graveyards and cemeteries are privately owned and not open to the public. Check with local officials to make sure it's all right to go in the cemetery. Also check if headstone rubbings are allowed. Some states have banned this practice because of damage that can occur to the tombstones. Damage occurs when a brush is used to try to clean the lettering and wears away the writing. I realize cleaning to make clearer pictures is an act of kindness but makes for some unhappy folks.

At this point, I don't connect, but every Hostetter in North America traces back to a Swiss Mennonite who came to Pennsylvania to follow his religious beliefs. His name was Jacob. Census wasn't taken until April 1, 1910. If he died prior to that he wouldn't be on the census. Even if he died in early April 1910, he may not appear on the census, especially if he was single. Try contacting the Burton Historical Collection of the main Detroit Public Library to request a look up in the City Directory. Or if they don't do that, try the Bentley Historical Library in Ann Arbor. They have Detroit City Directories. http://www.detroitpubliclibrary.org/burton/burton_index.htm http://bentley.umich.edu/refhome/refform.php The main library in Livonia has some of the Detroit City Directories on microfilm and I am pretty sure that they have 1910.
