The Archdiocese website has a parish locator but I didn't see one that looks like one that your grandmother would have attended. Any possibility it was Our Lady of Help on the east side? Go to the following and click on "Parish Information" on the left hand side. They have a list of the closed parishes also. http://www.aodonline.org/AODOnline/AODOnline.htm Or call the Burton and see if someone will look it up in the City Directory. You could also ask the new archivist at the above website. There is a place to email her or him somewhere on the website. Their is a new archivist. Mary was born in Indiana as were her parents. 1930 census (in Maryland) shows Charles with wife Jewell M. (sic) He was 21 at first marriage and she was 20. Shows her birthplace as Michigan but parents were born in England and Germany. 1910 census shows that Julia was born in Michigan as were her parents. 1942 Draft registration shows his wife as Julia M. Cannot find a marriage for them on the Mormon website but I don't know if it has all the marriage records on it yet for Michigan. There is a marriage record for one of Charles' sisters. Possibly they married at the same church and if you can find out where the minister was who married his sister and her husband, you may find Charles' records. http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=0 Do you know where Charles is buried or do you have the name of the funeral home? I would check there to see if his wife is buried with him or if the funeral home handled her arrangements. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I found 4 with the last name of Vinet/Vinette and can't account for them in my Vinette family tree. Smith and Elizabeth Miller. The Silas Farmer History of Detroit says they were married in 1869. Census records imply about 1867. They both lived in Sumpter, Wayne, MI so were probably married near there. I submitted a vital records request to Wayne County to cover 1866-1868 and got no response (I suppose 1869 is possible and my range missed it). I tried searching Ancestry.com that says they have the database of Michigan marriages that cover this time, but they don't show up. Elizabeth Miller was listed as a mulatto in some of the census records - I think she was Native American from Delaware. Would this have changed how or where the marriage would be recorded? Family info: Francis Leonard Smith (parents John R. Smith and Eliza Ann Thurston) b. 3 Mar 1845 (some records say a couple of years different) Elizabeth Miller (probably daughter of Robert Miller of Sumpter who was from Delaware and had a daughter Elizabeth, but I don't have confirmation until the marriage record) b. Aug 1847 in Delaware Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I'm not absolutely positive, but House of Good Shepherd rang a bell for me. I "think" that's where my Mom was sent to by her step-mother when she was just starting high school. Mom wasn't a problem child as much as she was in the new brides way. Mom was fostered home from there IF that's the place she was sent to. Many of those places were dumping grounds for people--kids mainly, that others didn't want to be bothered with. You just had to have enough money and know the right people to have someone committed.
