It is held at the Detroit Public Library. You can e-mail the Burton Historical Collection and request a search. The Wayne County clerk has a card index to deaths for the whole county EXCLUDING City of Detroit. The index is by soundex code of surname, then alphabetical by first name. It is inclusive of all deaths except the most recent that are computerized. Michigan vital records has an index for every year after 1914 that is alphabetical by surname. Roger rsl.genealogy.com. I hope this will help and that you can help me with the photos. MARIE GENERAL SMITH - FIRST LADY OF DETROIT By Kenneth A. Merique For many years there had been much conjecture regarding the ancestry of John W. Smith, former mayor of the city of Detroit. Smith, who was elected mayor of Detroit 4 November 1924 to fill the unexpired term of Frank Doremus and then was reelected 3 November 1925 for a two-year term, was long rumored to be of Polish lineage. It was, in fact, Marie General Smith, wife of the mayor, who was of Polish heritage. Marie General was born 13 December 1886 in Detroit, the daughter of John W. General, originally Jednoralski, and Rose Heinz (Hintz), both Austrian Poles. The General family were parishoners at St. Albertus Roman Catholic Church, Detroit, and Marie and her sisters, Rose and Elizabeth, and their brothers, John and Michael, attended St. Albertus School. The General Family resided at 1102 Dubois, Detroit, and prior to her marriage Marie was employed as a cigarmaker in one of Detroit's many east side cigar factories. In 1908 Marie General married John W. Smith, a man who was destined to have an illustrious career in Detroit politics. It was written that Smith had organized the Polish wards for Truman Newberry in the 1918 senate race against Henry Ford. This act could have been construed as one to benefit Smith's own ethnic group. The marriage of Marie General and John W. Smith produced two children: a daughter, Dorothy, and a son, John W. Smith, Jr. During this period, the Smith family became parishioners at St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church, Detroit, and it was here that Dorothy Smith married George Michael Faust, 9 November 1940. Marie General Smith passed away Tuesday, 4 November 1941, at the family residence, 3538 Oakman Boulevard, Detroit. She was survived by her husband, John, daughter, Dorothy Faust, son, John W. Smith, Jr., brothers, John and Michael General, and sisters, Rose Staley and Elizabeth Patras, all of Detroit. Marie General Smith's funeral mass was conducted at St. Cecilia Church with interment following at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Detroit. Shortly after her death, the newly-widowed mayor lost both his son and daughter. Grief stricken, the mayor succumbed 17 June 1942 in Detroit. Within a seven-month period, the entire immediate family had passed away. Smith was laid to rest beside his wife at Mount Olivet Cemetery. If she died in Detroit, the County won't have her death certificate. If she died in a hospital, it seems more likely that she was in Detroit. I think for that time period there were more hospitals in Detroit than in the suburbs. Following is a list of hospitals. Even though it is from 1967, you can see how many are in Detroit compared to the surrounding suburbs. We lived in Dearborn but four of my sisters were born in a Detroit hospital as were many of my cousins. What vexes me then is why the Wayne County Clerk said there was no record. My hunch is that there were too many Elizabeth Smith results for that year, and they didn't thoroughly check each one. If some piece of information I provided was wrong (like location of death - I gave them a few options), then they may just not have even bothered to look into the record in more detail. I forgot to get the record when I was at the county clerk office last month. It's easier to talk with them about what they're finding as they do it. With the mail, they just send you a response without explanation of what they found. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello, Wayne County probate files to 1900 were filmed by LDS. The Archives of Michigan has the films and offers a copy service. The Detroit Police have told me that theit records were water damaged and thrown away. I question this as this summer there was a newspaper article about saving some old files and discarding the rest. Search the Detroit Free Press archives for the article. You should check with the Wayne County coroner. They may have information. Hello! I have a couple questions regarding probate and police records. Both of these events took place in the city of Detroit. First: I have the file number of the will when Francis Schulte died in 1869. My question is this. where do I see the actual documents? Second: August Schulte was found floating in the Detroit river one early morning in 1881 after being missing for a couple days. Per the newspaper report, as there was no evidence of violence on his person his death was deemed a suicide. I am imagining the police were involved. do any of these old reports still exist, and where would I go to look? Thanks for your help and your suggestions! Who operates that cemetery? I am related to Elizabeth Smith (nee Miller) who is buried in the big Smith plot in the back left of the cemetery. The tombstone says she died in 1921, but I'd like to know what month or day. I tried to submit a death certificate request to the Wayne County Clerk but they returned it with no record found. I think they just didn't do a good search through 1921 for Elizabeth Smith. I figured if I can find a more precise date, at least a month, I could try again with them. I've "rescued" an old photograph identified as Ida EBERLE which was taken at the Van Sickle Studio in Chicago, Illinois. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Ida likely in her teens or 20's at the time. In addition to her name, someone has also written "Cousin" and "Mrs. Robert STELLS" and "died in Detroit, buried in Canada, Trinity Church Yard, 2 miles out of Morpeth (hard to read), Ontario". The writing is difficult to read as someone has written over the top of a portion of it as if in an attempt to correct spelling. I am guessing that she was married to Robert STELLS, though the last name is difficult to make out. I am hoping to locate someone from Ida's family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of her family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
