The paper isn't as good as I hoped, but it's still another valuable resource. There were not many birth, marriage, and death announcements (probably about 10-20% of my family's events were in there). There were some announcements of divorces which could come in handy. The most interesting thing was just seeing articles about events around that time, like the Polish church openings, etc. At least I know of *one* place that has this database - hopefully, we'll find some others. You could email the Livonia library and ask them to look at the microfilm for The Detroit News. The notices online for the Detroit News are the death notices only-not obituaries. You could ask the library staff to look for both a death notice and an obituary. They are sometimes put in the paper after the services after taken place, so I would ask them to look for several days after the DOD-maybe even up to a week. I think, even if the Library subscribes to Proquest, it doesn't mean they have the Historical Detroit News. I checked Michigan State University's Library. They subscribe but do not have the Historical collection for Detroit. -----Original Message----- From: miwayne-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:miwayne-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Brickwal Sent: Friday, November 20, 2009 9:16 AM To: kinshipmatters@twmi.rr.com; miwayne@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MIWAYNE] Detroit Free Press now onProquestHistoricalNewspapers database! Hello everyone. I emailed Proquest myself. The Historical Newspapers database which may contain the Detroit newspapers is ONLY available to libraries or organizations. NOT for individual consumer subscriptions. The Proquest representative advised that we need to request our community libraries to subscribe. You can call/write to Proquest and ask them where the closest library is to your zip code who subscribes. Donna

Just want to clarify a few things. Lillian was my Grandmother. We know when she died, even where she is buried, but nothing more. Just found out after reading your e-mail with my Mom on the phone that my dad apparently has a copy of the death certificate! I am going to utilize your links and see what else I can find. It is so maddening that no one has information or is willing to part with it. There has to be more about her and her family than a death certificate and census records while she was a child. This has been the thorny search for 20 years that I have been researching. Thank you so much for your help. Susen Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
