Author: Eamann Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.michigan.counties.wayne/18016/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello! I am trying to find information about my grandfather who emigrated to Dearburn in the early decades of the 20th. century. Being used to a centralised national system of registration of births, deaths and marriages (I live in Belgium), I am bewildered at the fragmented data sources in the USA and I would welcome some advice as to how to proceed. My grandfather Michael Magee was born in Belfast, N. Ireland, on 11 June 1896. At the end of the First World War he went to work in England and then emigrated to the US sometime between 1924 and 1930. When he arrived in America he went to live in 9966 Yellstone Avenue in Dearburn, Michigan. According to family lore, he moved later to Detroit, where George Magee, his elder brother, and Mary, his younger sister, were already living. Michael was a motor mechanic and he probably went to work at Ford's. Michael divorced my grandmother (Ellen Magee née O'Kane) from the USA in the middle of the 1930's and then married another woman. They had two children: - George, born in approx. 1934. - Brian, born at an unknown date. According to my mother, Michael stood for election at some point. She also claimed that he was interested in Christian Science (perhaps because of his second wife?). My initial searches show that according to the 1930 census a Michael Magee was living in Wayne Country, Detroit with a lady called Janet, but I cannot be sure that he is my grandfather. I also found a George Magee who died in 1954 and is buried in Grand Lawn Cemetery "aka Grand View Cemetery", 23501 Grand River Ave., but again I cannot be sure that he is related to me. Any advice and help on how to proceed using on-line resources would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! Eamann Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
