I have been doing a lot of digging and searching "on foot" in Pennsylvania. I have found a lot about my ancestors searching through old newspapers online, tramping trough cemeteries, and spending afternoons at local historical societies. I cannot go out everyday. I am currently recovering from shoulder surgery and cannot drive so I am renewing my search online to see what else I might dig up there. This is one very small branch of the family that moved out of state. Even if I go out there, it is not going to add "a lot" to my tree. I have all of the info. I just wanted a copy of the obit. Thanks for your "insight"... Rhonda Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Oh lighten up... the person was just trying to be helpful. If you were a regular user of this list, and others, then you would know that most people are here to help and have no idea what you've already done or plan to do in your quest for answers. A lot of people in these lists are just starting out and have little or no idea where to begin. Marc > > Message Board Post: > > Of course I know that. Not all is on the internet. It requires searching the area they lived in, writing to the libraries etc in the area. Better yet is to plan a vacation around your research and actually visit the area they lived. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I found the city directories. It looks like they only go up to 1936. They didn't move there until the early 40's so that wouldn't help. You would need to google for the library url. Wyandotte Bacon Library. I think it allows you to e-mail them direct - if not you can write them for a copy. If you have the exact date - they are good about doing it. volunteers do it so they don't really have time to do alot of searching. The index is for any article in the local paper that has a locals name in it. I am in there for a school grant, marriage, children's births etc. so it goes a long ways back! There is a website which gives a limited number of the burials at Elmwood. -----Original Message----- From: miwayne-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:miwayne-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of gc-gateway@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, March 15, 2010 7:50 PM To: MIWAYNE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MIWAYNE] Mueller This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. It listed the name, date of birth and death, place of death, and cemetery I think. It went up to 1962. That said, I actually found one of the obits I was looking for today online. However it wasn't in a Michigan paper. They published it back here in PA also since that's where my aunt was from. However, her daughter died 26 July 1968 in Wyandotte and that obit was not in our hometown paper back here in PA. If the newspapers were on strike there I guess there is a possibility that no obit exists? My uncle died in Trenton, MI on 24 May 1985. I thought I'd be able to find something online but I guess not. Here in my area of PA most of our newspapers are online and we can just search for an obit. I guess I am spoiled! Rhonda Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You can find single obits posted by people on various boards. If you have a date of death, it is possible to get a death notice from several places-one free. Depending on where you live, you can also get the microfilms of the Detroit papers. Detroit newspapers were on strike from November 15, 1967 to August 8, 1968. You mentioned that you cannot find anything from 1963 on. Have you found a website that has the Detroit newspapers from the 1800s to 1963? If so, would you let us know where to find this? Am I just not looking in the right place? Most of my research is in PA and I have managed to find most obits from the 1920's to present. Just off the top of my head--July 1967 were the Detroit riots. It was a horrid time. Then April 4th 1968 MLK was assasinated and things were extremely tense at that time. The police and fire departments were all called in; vacations canceled etc. My guess would be that if any of the papers were publishing at that time--it was about current events. I don't recall any "paper strikes" at this time but then that was over 40 years ago. Wyanotte's Bacon Memorial Library has them on fiche/film and in a card index.
