I went with a friend in the late 1970's to visit her mother who was in the mental ward there for schizophrenia. It was an old dreary building. It was scary!! Narrow hallways with locked gateways and small rooms with people in them. We were in a big community room surrounded by mentally ill people. It was quite an experience. -----Original Message----- From: Joyce Stevens <joycestevens@twmi.rr.com> To: miwayne@rootsweb.com Sent: Sun, Mar 28, 2010 11:30 am Subject: Re: [MIWAYNE] Mental Hospitals Eloise Hospital had indigents sent there in the late fifties and early sixties, the 1900's but the City of Detroit Welfare Department.I don't know how far back that practice went. Should have the place where she died. Cost is either $26 or $27. May want to see if Northville issues death certificates. If they do and she died at Northville, it will be less expensive. If you are not sure of her DOD and you have access to Ancestry.com, there is an index to Michigan Deaths from 1971-1996 but there are some errors in it. 3. In the olden days, east side Detroit residents were committed to Ypsilanti State Hospital; west siders went to Northville State. Never understood the reasoning, but that is the way it was. -----Original Message----- From: miwayne-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:miwayne-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of gc-gateway@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, March 27, 2010 7:33 PM To: MIWAYNE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MIWAYNE] State / Mental Hospital / Sanitariums of Detroit area This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. 2. try using google.com and type in "cemeteries in howell mi" I got a number of various listings including the City of. Under the community Services tab found Parks and Cemetery but when looked at didn't see cemetery information. I start here and would either call or email the parks department or contact the clerk's office. You should be able to find the person responsible for cemetery information without too much trouble. I would also follow up with some of the others as well as any church related cemeteries. Fortunately, Howell is still a fairly small area. I don't have the link but know on the Lib of Mi site there was a link to a listing of cemeteries around the State as well as a map. No contact information but locations. This is from a map book and cemetery book they published many years ago. It is an excellent reference.
