Author: Georgia1910 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.michigan.counties.wayne/18990.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The State charges $26.00 for a one year search and $12.00 for each additional year. If I remember correctly it went from $15.00, which included a three year search, to the $26.00 fee if ordered by mail from the State. I think it is the county and/or the City of Detroit that charges $22.00 and I believe the act that changed the fee schedule allows the various county and city offices to charge up to the $26.00 fee. If you know for sure where the person died, it helps to check the city to see if they have vital records. Some do and some don't. Most of them charge less than the State. I know the City of Dearborn, Livonia and Allen Park have death records as well as Detroit. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. They charge $15.00 per obit whether they find them or not. http://www.detroit.lib.mi.us/research-resources Or if your library participates in the Inter Library Loan (ILL) program, you could order the films of the papers. For that time period, I have found that the Detroit News seems to have more death notices, followed by the Detroit Free Press. http://www.detroit.lib.mi.us/specialservice/interlibrary-loans-0 Or you could try the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research to see if someone would look for them. http://www.dsgr.org/ Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The State of Michigan would prefer that you pay $22 to obtain a death certificate, rather than allowing them to be posted where anyone can access them FREE. Doesn't Michigan still have a financial crisis? So if 50 researchers pay $22 each month, and multiply that by 12 months for 10 years, well, you get the point.
