    1. Re: [MIWASHTE] SCOTNEY
    2. Carol, The Scotney Brothers owned land in sections 32 & 33 in Superior Township as of 1895, (plat book). They purchased additional land in section 33 as of 1915 and I am told they ran an extensive dairy operation. The land had a one room school on it, Superior Township district 6, and William Scotney was the district director in 1887 & 1888, probably serving a one year term. The death records for Superior Township, 1911-1952 show (1) Charles E. Scotney, died at the age of 70, DOB 25 February 1861, DOD 20 Nov 1931; (2) Marian Goodley Scotney, female age 82, DOB 25 Nov 1825, DOD 1 April 1912, maiden name Goodley; (3) William H. Scotney, died at age 82, DOB 6 August 1855, DOD 2 January 1938. The above people are probably buried at Highland Cemetery in Ypsilanti, their land being just north of the City of Ypsilanti. More information can be learned from the Register of Deeds for Washtenaw County in Ann Arbor (don't ask them to search the records, they don't have the manpower). Deeds will give you purchase and sell dates, principals, and sometimes some interesting "tidbits". Also, since William died in Washtenaw County there may be a probate file, often informative. The Genealogical Society of Washtenaw County has an index of probate files and someone there would probably be willing to check the index to see if a file exists. Reading the file becomes more complicated since the Probate Court has to get the file from their archives which takes a day. If you wish I will see what we have re additional death information. I have done no research on the Scotneys and would appreciate you giving me a brief summary of what you find out about the family after you have put it together since they appear to have been fairly long term residents of our township. There are still people here who remember them. The land they owned is currently an abandoned farm and some of the structures, the silos I think, still stand, but it is planned for development soon, so if you wish to see it as it was, sort of, best plan to make a trip to Ypsilanti this summer. Regards, Karl Williams
