Hi Maria, Oh, yes, it is O.K and fine to take photos of headstones. Luckily, I have photos from the 1920's of my great grandparent's & great great grandparent's headstones from Boyne City, MI. Headstones break, are kicked over by teens & stolen. Some are military headstones from the Rev. & Civil War and give the Regiment's unit. There are whole sites devoted to photographing old headstones & putting them on the 'net. I have a photograph of Capt. George Denison's headstone in CT & he died in the 1600's. It is completely appropriate. I need to come back to MI & visit the Fifield Cemetery in Jackson County & see the Tainter monument. You should be able to type in your search engine the Dibean Marriage Index & get to a site or go to any MIGENWEB site. Washtenaw County MIGENWEB lists marriages posted by Jack & Marianne, under the T's, you would find "Tainter, Daniel & Polly Godfrey" the first recorded marriage in MI on May 29th, 1832, by Judge Doland, in Washtenaw County, MI. Remember to put any inf. about the headstones on paper or better yet do a "rubbing", place paper and place over the stone & rub with charcoal. Welcome to the world of genealogy--history, geography, biology, investigation & detective work all rolled into one field. Great fun! Thanks Marilyn for the info. I just didn't want to think I was doing something that would be inappropriate to do. Where is Fifield Cemetery? I live in Jackson, and I have never heard of that cemetery? If you want, I can try to take a photo and email it to you. You have been such a help to me, I would like to repay the favor somehow. After I get into this genealogy more, I hope I can help someone else out, because so many people have been such a great help to me, and being new to genealogy there is so much to learn. But, someday, I hope I will be able to help someone else out who is new to it. There is another person named Karen, that has helped me greatly. She is such a sweetheart! In one of my other emails, I said that with so much negativity going on, there REALLY is WONDERFUL people out there willing to help. And I want to really thank them all from the bottom of my heart.
