Need help to locate or access source information on Great Great Grandfather, Ephraim Cummings. Last known address, according to the Jun 1, 1880 Census, was 2d Ward, Ypsilanti. Age 67. Living with second wife, Martha, age 79. I suspect Ephraim may have died somewhere in Washtenaw County. Does anyone know the name of the local newspaper which was published in the 1880's? Are articles (obits?) easily available? Thank you, David Cummings Portland, OR (formerly of Battle Creek, Michigan)
In the past I have found that the Bentley Library was glad to accept similar documents. Robert E. Miller

Jan Tripp -- Why don't you send the abstracts to the State Library? Ann Marr
Dear Washtenaw County Researchers, The Genealogical Society of Washtenaw County recently received a small box of abstracts of title for properties in the City of Ann Arbor. The abstracts were compiled by the Washtenaw Abstract Company and others from 1922-1972. The bulk of the files appear to be abstracts of properties owned by the Inter-Cooperative Council at the University of Michigan. The Society has no room for these files in their library and they would like to dispose of them. If anyone is interested in the files, they may have them for pre-paid postage. Please contact me off-list if you are interested. I have briefly summarized the files below. The abstracts contain summaries of deeds, mortgages, wills, and tax payments documenting the history of a piece of property back to original land owner in the 1820's. The original records abstracted are at the Washtenaw County Courthouse. Often deaths, wills, divorces and other bits of information are found in the abstracts. If you are lucky enough to own one of the properties, you have a very complete genealogy of your house. One abstract I found in the box was for a house where I rented a room when I was a student at UM. Interesting place -- no smoking, no kitchen, no parking, and no women allowed on the premises. Lots of rules but for $10/wk it was a bargain. My land lady said her parents owned the house, she had there her entire life and never married. All this and more was confirmed in the abstract file. Who knows what you will find? Mr. Jan E. I've "rescued" an old photograph of C. B. WOODWARD of Ann Arbor, Michigan which was taken at the Gibson Studio in Ann Arbor, MI. The photograph is dated May 21st 1882 with Mr. WOODWARD appearing to be in his 20's at the time it was taken. In addition to his name he has also included the following notation on the back of the photograph "Compliments of" and "Clerk St. James Hotel" along with "Your Room Mate" and "Room No 311, 2nd Flight, Hall No. 2" and "One of the Gang". In addition, along the side is written "Jim, always look for the moon". I am under the impression the Mr. WOODWARD and the recipient of the photograph worked together at the hotel mentioned and shared some good memories. I'm hoping to locate someone from Mr. WOODWARD's family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

Jonathan B. NICHOLS, b. 22 September1777, Pembroke, Plymouth, Mass.; died 1834, Pittsfield, Washtenaw, Michigan. He married Keziah DRAKE, daughter of Nathan DRAKE and Jemima GAY, b. 12 August 1772, Stoughton, Norfolk, Mass. Date and place of death unknown. In 1800 they were living in the Town of Pompey, Onondaga County, N.Y. There were two (2) males b. 1790-1800; one b. 1755-1774. Three (3) females: one b. 1790-1800; one b. 1774-1784; one b. 1755-1774. In 1810 they were living in the Town of Otisco, Onondaga County, N.Y. There were two (2) males, b. 1800-1810; one (1) b. 1784-1794; one (1) b. 1765-1784. Six (6) females: four (4) b. 1800-1810 [Two identified: Fanny, b. ca. 1805, and Lydia, b. ca. 1808.]; two (2) b. 1765-1784 [One identified: Keziah, b. 1772.] In 1880 census James M. NICHOLS household show his sister Fanny living with them in Ypsilanti, Michign. The Drake Family genealogy says that Jonathan and Kezia had 6 children: 1. Thomas, unmarried (unidentified and not located), 2. Fanny (identified); 3. Lydia md. Elias G. Dilla (identified); 4, Betsey, md. And had 1 child (unidentified and not located); 5. Amanda, m. Allen Buck (identified and located); 6. Caroline, m. ?? Kelley (unidentified and not located). I suspect there were two others who were never accounted for in the Drake genealogy.

I'm passing along the following info I received from the MI-WAYNE Rootsweb Mailing List about Senate Bill 0795 and the release of vital records over 75 years old to the State Registrar's office here in Michigan. I certainly wasn't aware that this Bill was pending and I'm thrilled to hear about it. I'm enclosing a copy of the note that I sent to my State Representative urging her to support the Bill and, in addition, to strengthen the Bill to make it mandatory for the State Registrar to establish an Internet-based mechanism to make these records and indexes of the records easily available to public. (Of course, I added my own personal slant on my plea.) I hope everyone subscribing to this list (and other MI lists) will take the time to support the Bill and pass the word along! Message Board Post: To all genealogists living in Michigan. Please write your State Representative and urge him or her to support Senate Bill 0795 which would allow the State Registrar's Office to release certain vital records over 75 years old to the State Library of Michigan in order to be made available to the public and aid genealogical research. See the following for the text of the bill as it was passed by the State Senate: http://www.legislature.mi.gov/(b05te445dkzcrmawzrybyb45)/mileg.aspx?page=BillS tatus&objectname=2005-SB-0795 The following website will help you find your representative: http://house.michigan.gov/find_a_rep.asp Subject: Support for Senate Bill 795 (Release of Vital Records for Genealogical Research) Dear Rep. ----------: I'm sure that you're aware that genealogical research is increasingly popular -- especially in the African-American community -- as people are increasingly eager to discover and connect with their past heritage. For example, Dr. Henry Lewis Gates recently hosted a series on PBS showing how he researched the family trees of Oprah Winfrey, Whoopie Goldberg, TD Jakes, Chris Rock and Dr. Ben Carsons, as well as his own family. The series and the family stories that unfolded as a result of Dr. Gates' research were extremely compelling and moving. However, this kind of genealogical research is entirely dependent upon the public availability of vital records of births, marriages and deaths. Michigan lags far behind many other states and Canada in actually making vital records easily available to the public for genealogical purposes by imposing antiquated and arbitrary time frames for the release of records and failing to maintain a centralized authority to collect and disperse this information in a manner that it may be easily accessed by individuals throughout the State. Unlike other states, such as Illinois, Michigan doesn't currently maintain a comprehensive Internet-based mechanism for making vital records readily available to the public. Instead, Michigan maintains only some limited (and incomplete) information on early Michigan deaths online. I'm therefore writing to urge you to support Senate Bill 0795 which would allow the State Registrar's Office to release certain vital records over 75 years old to the State Library of Michigan in order to be made available to the public and aid genealogical research. Because the State Library of Michigan is located in Lansing and therefore isn't accessible to many Michigan residents (especially seniors and lower-income residents) I'm also urging you to take steps to strengthen Senate Bill 0795 by making it mandatory for the State Registrar to: (1) establish an Internet-based mechanism to make these vital records available to the public with Internet access; and (2) actually transmit these vital records and indexes of these records to local governmental authorities, public libraries and private entities such as genealogical societies. Senate Bill 0795 only makes these two steps optional, thereby defeating the purpose of the Bill, in my opinion. The following is a link for the text of the bill as it was passed by the State Senate: http://www.legislature.mi.gov/(b05te445dkzcrmawzrybyb45)/mileg.aspx?page=BillS tatus&objectname=2005-SB-0795 Again, I urge you to support Senate Bill 0795 and to take steps to strengthen the bill requiring the State Registrar to establish appropriate mechanisms (including an Internet-based mechanism) to disseminate both the actual vital records and indexes of these vital records locally. Sincerely,
If someone still has their Ann Arbor News paper for February 12, 2006 would you please send me the obituary of my aunt: Katherine Rebecca Collingwood Thanks, Joyce Hambleton Whitten Monette, Arkansas
