    1. [MITCHELL] Mitchells in the UK
    2. Many Mitchells came to Ulster from Scotland. There's a good chronology on the Scottish Heritage Museum web site by Matthew Newsome on how the Ulster Scots migrated from Scotland and then to Charleston and Philadelphia seaports. The Mitchell name is also documented in Robert Bell's "Book of Ulster Surnames," which states that Mitchells are found in almost every county of Ireland. The name is among the 30 most common names in Scotland and is also very common in England according to Bell. Lionel Mitchell Yes, this is true, Mitchell is a common surname throughout the UK. Many Scots did migrate to Ulster, but Mitchell can also be found all over Ireland. According to one book that I have MITCHELL is most common in Ireland in county Antrim. MITCHELL is much more common in Scotland than Ireland. As some of us know from the DNA study the surname MITCHELL has probably been spelled many different ways and derives from more than one ethnic source. Doris Mitchell
